Kimberly (KC) Washington has an extensive background in English as a Second Language (TESOL) instruction and writing. She has a Certificate of TESOL from Brooklyn College, an Associate’s in Journalism from the University of Missouri-Columbia, a Bachelor of Arts in English from Brooklyn College, and a Masters in Bilingual/ESL with a minor in Reading from the University of Texas Permian Basin.
She has taught students from around the world in the fundamentals of English and English conversation at Brooklyn College in New York State and conducted private classes around New York City. She moved abroad in 2017, where she began Teaching English as a Second Language (TESOL) to elementary and middle school students in a private South Korean academy.
Within the private academy world, she creates curriculum and instructs young learners in the fundamentals of English with an emphasis on daily conversation and speaking confidence. The sole native English-speaking teacher at her academy, she has coached her students in speaking contests, given English language museum tours, and helped the school garner awards in excellence.
She also creates and teaches workshops on the elements of persuasive and narrative essay writing at the elementary, primary, and secondary level in the US and South Korea.
She has distinguished herself throughout her 20+ years in the writing field and 16 in the field of education. During her master’s program, she was lauded by her advisor for adding a five-page introduction to her group Strategies and Best Practices for Today’s English Language Learner: An ESL Strategy Handbook. It is an initiative her professor said no one had ever taken before.
KC’s goal is to instill an appreciation for spoken and written English in her classroom while cultivating her own interests and skills in the broader education community outside of the classroom.
In 2022, she was named Vice President of the Busan-Gyeongnam chapter of Korea TESOL (KOTESOL) and is a contributor to the academic journal The English Connection. Her most recent article “Motivation: Every Educator’s White Whale” appears in the Fall 2022 edition. As a guest lecturer and workshop presenter with the University of Texas Permian Basin (UTPB), she shares her education philosophy and teaching methods with students training to enter the field of education.
