This Privacy Notice for Kcal ("we," "us," or "our") describes how and why we access, collect, store, use, and/or share ("process") your personal information when you download and use our mobile application, Kcal.
Questions or concerns? Reading this Privacy Notice will help you understand your privacy rights and choices. If you do not agree with our policies and practices, please do not use our Services.
SUMMARY OF KEY POINTS
What personal information do we process? Kcal has no user accounts or sign-in. The information you provide is limited to what you enter directly: body stats during setup (sex, birth date, height, weight, activity level, dietary preference), and the food photos, food descriptions, and barcodes you log. This data is stored locally on your device.
Do we process any sensitive personal information? We do not collect racial or ethnic origin, sexual orientation, religious beliefs, or similar categories. We do process health-related information you provide voluntarily (body stats and food/nutrition data), which some jurisdictions classify as sensitive. See Section 1 for detail.
Do we collect any information from third parties? No, other than public nutrition data (not personal information) returned by the Open Food Facts barcode database when you scan a product.
How do we process your information? To calculate your personalized calorie and macro targets, to analyze food photos and descriptions you submit (via Anthropic's Claude AI), to process subscription payments (via Apple and RevenueCat), and to operate the app's backend infrastructure (via Supabase).
In what situations and with which parties do we share personal information? With Anthropic (food photo/text analysis), RevenueCat and Apple (subscription and payment processing), and Supabase (backend infrastructure that relays requests to Anthropic). See Section 3.
What are your rights? Because Kcal has no accounts, your data lives on your device. You can delete all of it at any time by deleting the app. See Section 13 for other requests.

WHAT INFORMATION DO WE COLLECT?
Kcal does not have user accounts, sign-in, or registration of any kind. There is no username, password, or profile tied to a real-world identity.
Information you provide directly:
Body stats entered during onboarding: sex, birth date, height, weight, goal weight, activity level, and dietary preference — used only to calculate your personalized calorie and macro targets.
Food photos you capture or select from your library, when using the photo-scan feature.
Food descriptions you type, when using text logging.
Barcodes scanned via your device camera, when using the barcode feature.
All of the above is stored locally on your device (in a local database) and is not tied to any account, since none exists. Food photos and text descriptions are additionally sent to Anthropic for analysis — see Section 5 for full detail.
Information automatically collected: Kcal does not use analytics, advertising, or tracking SDKs of any kind. We do not collect app usage statistics, behavioral data, or advertising identifiers. The only automatic technical data involved is what any network request inherently includes (such as IP address in server-side logs) when the app communicates with our backend (Supabase) to relay a photo or text analysis request to Anthropic, or with Apple/RevenueCat to process a subscription. This technical data is not used for analytics, profiling, or advertising.
HOW DO WE PROCESS YOUR INFORMATION? In Short: We process your information solely to provide the app's core features — calculating your targets, analyzing your food, processing your subscription — and for no other purpose.
Specifically, we process information to:
Calculate your personalized daily calorie and macro targets from the body stats you provide.
Identify food items and estimate calories/macros from photos or text you submit, via Anthropic's Claude AI.
Look up packaged food nutrition data from a barcode you scan, via the Open Food Facts database.
Process your subscription purchase, trial, and renewal status, via Apple's App Store and RevenueCat.
Enforce free-tier usage limits, using an anonymous, on-device identifier (see Section 5).
We do not process your information for advertising, marketing communications, or any purpose beyond operating the features described above.
WHEN AND WITH WHOM DO WE SHARE YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION? In Short: We share information only with the specific service providers necessary to operate Kcal's features — never for advertising or marketing purposes.
Anthropic (Claude AI): food photos and text descriptions you submit for analysis are sent to Anthropic to identify food items and estimate nutrition. See Section 5.
Apple (App Store) and RevenueCat: subscription purchase, trial, and billing status are processed through Apple's in-app purchase system and RevenueCat, our subscription management provider. Payment card details are handled entirely by Apple; we never receive or see them.
Supabase: our backend infrastructure provider, which relays photo/text analysis requests to Anthropic. Supabase does not receive or store your body stats, meal history, or any locally-stored data — only the specific photo or text being analyzed at the moment of a request.
Open Food Facts: when you scan a barcode, the barcode number is sent to this public, third-party product database to retrieve nutrition information. No personal information about you is sent — only the product barcode.
Business Transfers: if Kcal is involved in a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, information may be transferred as part of that transaction, subject to this Privacy Notice.
We do not sell your personal information. We do not share it with data brokers or advertisers.
DO WE USE COOKIES AND OTHER TRACKING TECHNOLOGIES? In Short: We do not use cookies.
Kcal is a native mobile application and does not use cookies, web beacons, pixels, or other web-based tracking technologies.
ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE AND HEALTH DISCLAIMER In Short: AI-generated nutrition estimates are approximations and do not constitute medical advice.
Kcal uses artificial intelligence technology provided by Anthropic ("Claude AI") to analyze food photos and text descriptions and generate estimated calorie and nutritional information. When you use the photo or text logging features:
What is sent: the specific food photo you capture/select, or the text description you type.
Who it is sent to: Anthropic, PBC, a third-party AI service provider (learn more at Anthropic's own Privacy Policy: https://www.anthropic.com/legal/privacy).
Why: solely to identify food items and estimate calories, protein, carbs, and fat.
Identity: this data is not linked to your identity — Kcal has no accounts, and no name, email, or other identifying information is attached to the photo or text sent.
Your consent: the app asks for your explicit permission the first time you use the photo or text logging feature, before any data is sent. You can decline, though this will limit your ability to use Kcal's AI-powered logging features.
Device identifier: to enforce free-tier daily usage limits, Kcal generates a random identifier stored securely on your device (via Apple's Keychain). This identifier is not linked to your name, email, or any other personal information, and exists solely to distinguish one device's usage from another's.
Please also be aware:
AI-generated calorie and macro estimates are approximations only and may not be accurate for your specific food items, portion sizes, or preparation methods.
The nutritional information provided by Kcal does not constitute medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment of any kind.
Kcal is not a medical device and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease or health condition.
Always consult a qualified healthcare professional before making significant changes to your diet, particularly if you have a medical condition, are pregnant, are breastfeeding, or are in recovery from an eating disorder.
Users with specific dietary medical requirements should not rely solely on AI-generated estimates for health-critical decisions.
By using Kcal's AI-powered features, you acknowledge that calorie estimation involves inherent uncertainty and that you assume responsibility for how you use this information.
IS YOUR INFORMATION TRANSFERRED INTERNATIONALLY? In Short: Our infrastructure is located in the United States.
Our backend servers (Supabase) and service providers are based in the United States. If you access Kcal from outside the United States, the food photos/text you submit for analysis, and any subscription data, will be transferred to and processed in the United States.
HOW LONG DO WE KEEP YOUR INFORMATION? In Short: Data you enter stays on your device until you delete it or delete the app. Data sent to Anthropic for analysis is not retained by us beyond returning the result to your device.
Body stats, meal logs, and saved meals are stored locally on your device for as long as the app is installed, or until you delete individual entries yourself. Deleting the app deletes this data. Food photos and text sent to Anthropic for analysis are used only to generate the requested result; Kcal's backend does not separately store copies of your food photos. For information on Anthropic's own data retention practices, see Anthropic's Privacy Policy.
DO WE COLLECT INFORMATION FROM MINORS? Kcal's App Store age rating is 13+. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. Since Kcal has no accounts and does not verify age beyond what Apple's App Store age rating enforces, we rely on Apple's platform-level age controls. If you believe a child under 13 has used Kcal and provided information subject to this notice, please contact us at kcalaiapp@gmail.com so we can address it.
WHAT ARE YOUR PRIVACY RIGHTS? In Short: Since Kcal stores your data locally and not on our servers, you control it directly by using the app's own delete functions or by deleting the app.
You can delete individual food entries, saved meals, or your entire local profile at any time within the app. Deleting the app removes all locally stored data from your device. For questions about data sent to Anthropic during analysis, or to make any other request regarding this notice, contact us at kcalaiapp@gmail.com.
CONTROLS FOR DO-NOT-TRACK FEATURES Kcal does not use tracking technologies that Do-Not-Track signals apply to, since we do not use cookies, advertising identifiers, or cross-app/cross-site tracking of any kind.
DO WE MAKE UPDATES TO THIS NOTICE? In Short: Yes, we will update this notice as necessary, including to reflect app changes or legal requirements.
We may update this Privacy Notice from time to time. The updated version will be indicated by an updated "Last updated" date at the top of this notice. We encourage you to review this notice periodically.
HOW CAN YOU CONTACT US ABOUT THIS NOTICE? If you have questions or comments about this notice, contact us at: kcalaiapp@gmail.com
HOW CAN YOU REVIEW, UPDATE, OR DELETE THE DATA WE COLLECT FROM YOU? Because Kcal has no accounts and stores your data locally on your device, you have direct control over your data at all times:
To review or update your data: open the app and edit your profile, meal entries, or saved meals directly.
To delete your data: delete individual entries within the app, or delete the app entirely to remove all locally stored data at once.
For any other request, including questions about data processed by Anthropic during food analysis, contact us at kcalaiapp@gmail.com.
