The University of North Carolina System Office develops policies and oversees compliance for the university system. The Office was tasked with developing and updating COVID-19 policies and guidance throughout the course of the pandemic.
In the first months of COVID-19, there was a lot of confusion. Scientific information was in flux and evolving, while misinformation spread as quickly as the virus. People living and working in close proximity at universities, where communicable diseases can spread quickly, needed clear, reliable guidance. The Office worked quickly to create COVID-19 policies, and needed training developed and deployed rapidly, that was also easy to update quickly.
Solution
I prioritized speed and adaptability for this project. Since there was no time for a formal needs analysis, I reviewed reports of recently collected data and consulted stakeholders to better understand learner needs.
Likewise, I chose to develop the course in Articulate Rise 360 because of its rapid development capabilities. Rise allowed us to quickly launch the first version and make seamless updates as new guidance emerged. The initial course focused on clearing up misinformation, introducing key epidemiological terms, and sharing CDC and NCDHHS official resources. As policies took shape, I shifted the focus to University-specific protocols, updating the training to ensure staff had the latest guidance when needed.
Results
The training was deployed across 16 North Carolina universities and provided staff a reliable, accessible, and up-to-date resource for navigating COVID-related challenges.
