The Karol Bilyj memorial bonspiel is a seniors' bonspiel. To be eligible, men must be 55 or over and women 50 or over. It is an open bonspiel; the team may have any gender combination. Five member teams are permitted when following ROC 2022-2026 substitution rules. A spare may not play on any other team in the bonspiel.
Registration has two sections to complete. The first section is your first-game date and time preferences. There are five options. Please make first (1), second (2) and third (3) choices if possible, but only one is required. This selection will impact the day (either Wednesday or Thursday) that your other pre-final games are played. All finals are played on Friday. All teams are guaranteed at least three games.
The last part of the form is for contact information. With 24 teams playing over 4 days, some negotiation is probable. We will try to accommodate teams as much possible for schedule or travel restrictions. The bonspiel was originally proposed as a way to showcase our Manotick Curling Club to the rest of Ottawa and surrounding areas; we will carry on that tradition by giving entry preference to visiting teams.
We encourage registration using our online form or by email to our KBMSB registration address. Registration is initiated by selecting the Registration button. For online registration, click the link to the registration form, enter the requested information and click the submit button. For email or regular mail. select the link to download the form. Then fill it in and email to Kbman2023@gmail.com. Alternatively, the filled-in form may be printed and mailed to Manotick Curling Club, Attn Ken Adams, 5519 South River Drive, Manotick, Ontario K4M 1J3. Note that email will be received much sooner.
Payment for the bonspiel may be done by etransfer (preferred) or cheque. We require one payment per team ($320, which already includes hst).
For etransfer, use email address payments2.mcc@gmail.com. No security question is required, but please identify your team name in the Message part. Please make cheques payable to Manotick Curling Club. Again, identify the team name in the Memo part.
Please note that registration is not complete until team payment has been received.
We will be using the Rules of Curling (ROC) 2022-2026 for General Play for the bonspiel, which has the five rock rule. Games will use the newly adopted "no tick" rule. Games are a maximum of eight (8) ends. Ties at the end of the game are broken by skips rock, with no sweeping by an opposition member.
To keep next round games close to schedule, we will use a derivative of our Bell Rule. The bell will “ring” 1 hour and 35 minutes after the start of the game. The glass in front of each sheet will have a board with the start time and the Bell Time. At the Bell Time, you may complete the end you are currently playing, and then play one more end. Note that the current end is not complete until the first rock of the next end crosses the closest T-line.
The start time is considered to be the scheduled start time unless play is delayed because the ice is not ready. If the ice is not ready, a bonspiel official will note the deficiency and allow an equal time adjustment to the Bell Time.
Except for the Consolation final, only wins and losses are considered; please stop playing when the game cannot be won.
The schedule will be posted in the lobby of the Manotick Curling Club. It will be updated as each game is completed. Your opponent for the first game will be decided by draw of a card. You selected the time and date of your first game as part of registration. Thereafter, the schedule will identify your next opponent and game time.
Morning games are played starting at 08:45am or 11:00am. Afternoon games start at 01:30pm or 03:45pm. These times provide 2 hours of playing time per game with 15 minutes between games for ice preparation (pebbling and nipping). From 01:00pm – 01:30pm is reserved for ice maintenance (scraping, pebbling and nipping).
We will also provide an online version of the schedule in Google Sheets. It can be accessed through the Schedule button and will be updated daily. Note that the online schedule has a horizontal sidebar at the bottom of the schedule since it does not all fit on the page at this font size. Alternatively, press the zoom out ("-") button at the bottom of the schedule.
It is your responsibility to review the MCC lobby schedule board and know when your next game starts.
Cash prizes will be awarded in 4 categories, the categories being A winner and runner-up, B winner and runner-up, C winner and runner-up, and Consolation winner and runner-up. With a full field of play, more than $4000 cash will be awarded in total. As well, a number of gift certificates will be awarded for other teams reaching the semi-finals.
A, B, and C winners will be awarded the trophy for winning their division of the KBMSB. The trophy will be updated with a plaque with the winning team member names and is awarded annually. The trophies will remain in-house at Manotick for next years winners.
The bar will open at 11:00am. The MCC bar only accepts debit or credit cards for payment.
For Game 1 snacks will be provided after the game to the participating teams.
For games on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, lunches will be provided between 11:30am and 01:30pm. The lunch meal will be different for each day.
Snack items (such as peanuts, chocolate bars, potato chips and Microwave popcorn) may also be purchased at the bar.
