Kayla Jené is a recent Film and Media Studies graduate from Georgia State University. She is currently writing screenplays, creating short films with friends, and writing extensive essays about a diverse variety of topics. She prides herself on being someone who steps out of the box. There is nothing she believes she can’t write or turn into a creative project. When she’s not creating you can find her out on a nature walk, reading a beautiful book, shopping as a hobby, or playing a story-based video game.
She cites Marissa Meyers, Rachel Renée Russell, Dana Terrace, Rebecca Sugar, and Bryan Lee O'Malley as inspirational writers she admires.
In high school, I was in a film pathway that was heavily production-based. I had desired to create films that allowed my ideas to come to life on the big screen. Though initially, I wasn’t sure if my ideas were good enough. After graduation, I was unsure about my career options. During my undergraduate studies at Georgia State University, I changed my major and minor a few times. I was told several times that pursuing a degree in the arts was useless and a waste of time that could be better spent on a STEM degree. The value of my art degree meant nothing to my family and friends, and I was heavily discouraged from pursuing it. I spent time questioning the value of artistic creation. I allowed myself to be swayed by the minds of many. The consensus of those around me weighed on my mind as I decided to revert to my aspirations as a filmmaker.
Although I still wasn’t quite sure of what I wanted to do in the industry. It wasn’t until I took a Dramatic Writing class in my second year at Georgia State that I understood what I truly loved about film: the undercelebrated pre-production. This class inspired me to take a two-part Feature Screenwriting class, where I learned how to craft a longer, more detailed, and meaningful story through immersive world-building. I learned the merit of time and how beneficial it is for a project to be continuously revised. I gained the knowledge of how beneficial a step outline is, how to properly structure my story to fit the industry standard, and how personal I could become through my writing.
As a child, I would write chapter-length stories that I shared with the internet, family, and friends, and I had forgotten how much of an outlet writing was for me. I've always enjoyed writing essays and pretending to be a journalist detailing about the lives of others through my own narrative. Though, as a writer, I do not fit myself into a box. I also write using my personal thoughts and experiences combined with creative storytelling that isn’t only relatable to myself, but relatable to other individuals who have ever felt unseen. I'm on a journey of chasing an exhilarating dream of idea production. As an artist, there's no limitation to what I can create.
