About Us

History: Jim Greenhalgh and Bob Teare created Kayak Adventure Group (KAG) in June 2014 in order to have weekly, friendly, welcoming, non-competitive day paddles of 5-10 miles, with no rules, no dues, no judgments, and no nonsense. Since then, quarterly training sessions, major multi-day trips and many, many members have been added.

If you are looking for regularly scheduled, touring type kayak adventures, you have come to the right place. Contact us at the email address below.

How KAG Operates: KAG invites members on a word-of-mouth basis and we reach out to like-minded folks we meet on our adventures. We respond to inquiries from the Web within a few days. When a paddler becomes a KAG member, they receive our weekly emails and access to our private and protected Google Groups site, Kayak Adventure Group. On this site members will find detailed descriptions of current trips and other important information.

The weekly, direct emails to all KAG members provide detailed trip descriptions plus last minute updates about the weather.

We announce major trips well in advance with all the necessary information by direct email and also on our Google Groups site.

We also maintain a for-members-only Facebook page where KAG members can post photos and videos of trips.

Any member can organize a trip and our list of places to paddle has expanded as members have suggested and organized trips to new places. We encourage members to suggest and organize paddles.

For each trip we always let members know about the type of trip and its expected distance. We have recommendations about skills, strength, and endurance to consider for each trip.

  • River Trips: be comfortable with wet exiting

  • Coastal Trips: (less than 1/2 mile from shore, shallow water) also be comfortable with seas up to 2 ft.

  • Offshore Trips: (more than 1/2 mile from shore, deep, open water) be comfortable with seas 2 ft. and above and also with assisted or self rescue.

Safety and Training: As sea/touring kayakers we recognize the inherent risks of our sport. We train regularly, always practice caution, and always look out for each other on trips. We never tell KAG members what they must have or do. We expect all members to be responsible for themselves and help others as needed.

The Coast Guard sets the rules for safe boating. Please check our Safety & Training page for all the latest information. We also encourage members to consider taking a public boating safety course offered regularly by your local U.S. Power Squadron, AKA: America's Boating Club or U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary

We provide skills and rescue training and urge members to expand their skills for the safety of all on a trip. Every quarter we schedule a training session. In the warm water months we practice wet exits, bracing, assisted rescue, self-rescue and rolling, towing, transporting a swimmer, and rescuing an injured paddler. We're on the beach in colder months with seminars on navigation, radio and GPS use, ATONS, safety equipment and more. We enjoy the give and take, and we gain confidence.
