Purpose

The Monitor of All-sky X-ray Image (MAXI) was developed jointly by the Tokyo Institute of Technology, RIKEN, and JAXA. It has performed observations for 13 years since 2009 on the International Space Station. MAXI has discovered numerous new objects such as X-ray binaries, and conducted multi-wavelength observations in collaboration with the MITSuME ground-based telescope in Akeno and Okayama observatories. Since 2015, survey and follow-up observations of gravitational-wave phenomena have also been performed in collaboration with the gravitational-wave instruments LIGO and Virgo as a promotion of multi-messenger and time-domain astronomy, including the gravitational-wave astronomy.  In the project area "Gravitational wave physics and astronomy: Genesis," we have contributed to electro-magnetic observations using these instruments (JP17H06362). Here, we will hold a workshop "Transients and Variables" on March 9-10, 2023, to review our project and the latest research results. In this workshop, we will cover various kinds of transients and time-variable objects. Those who have difficulty in traveling can participate via Zoom. In the afternoon of the last day, we are planning to hold a retirement celebration session for Prof. Nobuyuki Kawai of Tokyo Institute of Technology, who will retire in March this year.
