This page features works from KAVOGUE's Nonfictional Writing Committee and Fictional Writing Committee! These works were printed out as photocards, that were sold during HUMSS Week 2023: ALA Fair, accompanied by lovely designs made by the amazing Aaliyah Mariam Latip, the head of the Graphic Design and Layout Committee! If you know the authors, let them know what you think of their work!
NON-FICTIONAL
Dagliang nahahagip ng mga mata
Mistulang mga bituin kapag
nakikita
Umiilaw at umaalab,
Minsa'y tanda ng munting mga
hiling
Madalas ay kaakibat ng natitirang
pag-asa
Seems like stars from a distance
Blazing fiercely across the sky,
Reminders of someone's hopes and
chances,
Eyes are slowly closed, the silence
echoes,
Patiently wishing as these fragments
listen
Stars travel in a linear pattern
guided by a local gravity field
and the chemical reactions
happening within its core.
Conveying a similar trajectory of
lines found in other universes –
like the fashion of how one’s
greatest desires commonly form
outside the line of demarcation
of the human mind.
Desires hidden in the mirage of
dreams that they so desperately hold
on to, embedded on the lines of their
palms and making it a part of
themselves forever.
Every night and then, we look up to
see dots of light from thousands of
years ago, existing with us in two
different times and spaces, proving
the existence of what once was.
Desire demands to be felt,
similar to how stars bite and
grasp on heavenly atoms for the
evocation of its presence. Letting
the definitive memory of
yearning draw breath now and
again, within the impermanence
of time.
To the very core of organic chemistry,
organic compounds follow the rule of
"structure dictates function"—the
bonds and atoms that make up a
molecule directly influence its
reactions, its potential, and its
capabilities. So when one is born
broken, when one is built with violent
hands, people assume who they should
be—irrational reactions, wasted
potential, stunted capabilities. It’s
inevitable. And I find it humiliating that
I hope otherwise.
FICTIONAL
Life is a simple harmonic motion. We
oscillate between the crests and troughs
of life, the amplitudes of happiness and
sadness, success and failure.
At times when everything seems to
stop (v=0) at these amplitudes, when
we feel that we drained all our (kinetic)
energy, remember that we still have the
potential (energy) within that gives us
force to move on, and continue in our
life’s cycle through time.
You are the wave that struck into my
life,
The seismic wave that shook my
sleepy mind,
The light that brightened up my lonely
world,
The lovely sound that's pleasing to the
ears.
If our interference did not occur,
I'll just be a particle, motionless in
space.
When you gaze into a mirror, you see yourself. Rather, an image of yourself. You see the wrinkles of your pajamas, the messiness of your hair, some strands tangled together. When you brush your hand through your hair, you see the image do the same. It copies whatever you do, yet it is not you, but a mere reflection of yourself.
A radiant warmth and engulfing glow
Ignite our memories that feel like home
Each confession of fondness draws out a constellation
Whose light guides the path to your final destination
When my wishes reach the stars and they tell you about it
Please meet me again on a night so heavenly moonlit
One formula makes a functional
molecule
Picked apart, reshaped, and
reconfigured to be better
The same species yet treated so invalid
The exact makeup yet treated so cruel
Is it a crime that you deem me a
stranger
A minority in a world seething with
hatred
As we breathe the cold air during the
night, we see the moon prevailing
above us, giving us light and hope in a
place surrounded by darkness.
Through the illumination of the light
from the sun, we see the unvalued
beauty of this heavenly object and our
surroundings as the night passes
through our naked eyes.
Rising up from the east and
plunging down to the west, our sun
gives us warmth in our lives. For
the past few billion years, the sun
wasthere bestowing our planet light
and hope of life.
Through the fusion of atoms deep
within the sun’s blazing innermost
core, light and energy were made to
accompany us in our lives. Without
our planet rotating and orbiting
around the sun, we would not be
able to cherish the value of the life
we have now.
From day-to-day, the sun will
constantly shine above us, giving
us the reason why life still exists.
As we contemplate the reason for
our existence in this world, we can
always look up and face the sun to
see its beauty and importance to
our lives.
Within the domain of thermodynamics, existence unfurls as a rhythmic interplay with entropy. Much like disorder intertwines with molecules, so too does uncertainty gracefully move through being. In the fabric of time, systems progress toward disarray, reflecting life's capricious path. However, amidst entropy's encompassing influence, lies the allure of adaptation, where the orchestration of chance crafts the harmonies of our collective reality.
In the atomic ballet, chaos
assumes its position,
Entropy's waltz, a celestial
expedition.
Order disintegrates, an
unyielding flow,
Systems decline, in nature's
rhythmic throw.
Yet, from disarray, fresh patterns
take flight,
Life's harmony, within entropy's
sight.
