A bit about us...
We all start from the bottom. Kauai Koi Company started as just a hobby in Koi Keeping that bloomed in to a passion and love for these beautiful swimmers. With our first koi being subject to a 55 gallon aquarium, we realized that wasnt suitable after a year of growth. We got our first pond at just 100 gallons and very soon after realized even that wouldn't be enough for these creatures to grow to their full potential. We upgraded our pond to 1000 gallons and increased our amount of fish friends. Many hurdles came about as the hobby was uncharted territory at the time. We suffered from faulty equipment, freak accidents, jumping fish, tempurature issues, filtration issues, illnesses, injuries, fatalities and much more! After learning through hands on experience along with the passion that came with the hobby, the business bloomed in to itself. Our goal is to bring happiness and joy through sharing our love of this aquatic hobby.
How do we keep our koi?
Upon arrival, our fish are kept in quarantine for 14 days prior to being advertised for sale in order to ensure you receive the healthiest koi possible. During this process, Kois are kept in a designated quarantine tank where they are observed daily for any flaws, illnesses or diseases. Treated as natural as possible using a concentration of pond salt and temperature control, our fish only receive chemical intervention when absolutely necessary.
Once our fish pass inspection and advance from quarantine, they are moved to a new tank where they are photographed and advertised for sale. Within this temporary home lies a maximum filtration system, UV sterilization, temperature control and regular water changes.
DIET: We all know that you are what you eat. For this reason, we only feed our kois the best! A rotation of JPD, KK Hi-Silk 21 and Saki Hikari are fed to our beauties.
How to properly acclimate your new Koi...
Fill your quarantine tank/bin with pond water (assuming your water peramiters are in order). Take note of your water volume for calculations.
Add a 0.3% concentration of pond salt to the water (3 pounds per 100 gallons of water)
Ensure that your water temperature is maintained at 68-75 degrees. (Use a heater if necessary)
Fit your quarantine tank with appropriate water filtration and aeration.
Fit your quarantine tank with a net or breathable cover as kois typically jump at this stage of movement.
A daily water change of 20% is necissary to prevent amonnia and nitrate spikes in this process.
Observe your koi daily for a minimum of 20 minutes a day for 14 days. Take note of any abnormal swimming patterns/behaviours, scails/skin health, fin health etc.
DO NOT feed your new koi for the first 3-5 days. This helps them acclimate faster and will lead to greater success in the transition stage.
Once you are sure that your new koi is healthy and ready to join the others, you may relocate to your desired pond/tank.
Did you know?
A healthy koi's lifespan can reach 200+ years! The oldest recorded koi was 226 years old. On average, most hobby kept koi will live 30-40 years.
The largest koi ever recorded was 4 feet long and 91 pounds. These fish need plenty of water volume!
Koi fish recognize human faces. They are often partial to the person who feeds them and recognize when someone unfamiliar is looking at them.
Koi fish do not have a stomach. Instead of storing food, their intestines are constantly processing their intake. Due to the lack of a stomach, it is best to feed small frequest meals throughout the day.
