レア度：たまに見られる？
形態：盤の直径は大きくても1㎝くらいまで。盤の表面は細かい鱗で覆われる。腕の長さは盤の直径の3～4倍程度。腕の付け根、「輻楯」がある場所はよく切れ込んでへこむため、盤の外形はやや特徴のある形になる。たとえるなら、折りたたみ式のボールがつぶれている感じ、である。
生息域：日本各地からロシアの沿海州に分布するが、特に東北や北海道の日本海側に多い。石の下に生息する。
生態：噴火湾では、繁殖期は6–7月 (Iwata & Yamashita 1982)。ニホンクモヒトデは大型卵でビテラリア幼生期を経るのに対し (Komatsu & Shosaku 1993)、本種は小型卵でオフィオプルテウス幼生期を経る (Yamashita 1985)。
