My Tutoring Philosophy

As a tutor at the University of Maine's Writing Center, my aim is to create an inclusive and collaborative space for writers of all backgrounds, all writing styles, and all levels to come together and produce great work. I encourage the use of multimodal tools and "non-traditional" learning methods such as visual representations, talk aloud protocols, and mapping out ideas.

I believe that collaboration is essential to learning not just in an academic setting, but as a worldview. Collaborating encourages the development of new perspectives and mindsets and I aim to do this through my tutoring and help my tutees do the same. Looking at their writing, at themselves, and at the world in a different way produces an engagement with new ideas and a willingness to freely express themselves. By encouraging expression, we can create a more inclusive community of writers and thinkers, especially at the UMaine Writing Center.
