I am currently in my final year studying Fine Art BA at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design (DJCAD) in Dundee, Scotland.
Unwanted treasures, splashes of colour and an attempt at humour. Katie Middleton is a mixed media artist, who uses a range of material and disciplines. Her work contains mostly woodwork, printmaking, painting, sketching, collage and sculptural processes. She is constantly exploring new avenues for her practice through the peculiarities of the everyday found objects, her characters (‘The Wee Weird Men’) and in the way she presents her work. Her practice aims to deliver a confusing yet abstract view of the world, through humour and obscurity. She is influenced by the interactions and observations of people, places and history. The effect of her curiosity with communities and cultures both similar and contrasting to her own, further drives her passion to produce work with alternative approaches and viewpoints. The process and outcome are to observe similarities and difference within humanity through a different lens, and provide an opportunity for others to understand this appreciation within the experience of her art. The key forces in her work are connection and interactivity, in which she delves into the idea of ‘breaking the fourth wall’ in the relationship between the art, artist and audience.
