An estate planning and elder law firm in Laytonsville, Maryland owned by M. Megan Campbell and Lindsay N. Warnes. They help clients create and file wills and trusts, as well as helping navigate probate.
My contact, M. Megan Campbell is the co-owner of Willow Legal Group, and specializes in both estate planning and elder law. The latter of which I was not aware existed. She helps many different clients get through will drafting all the way up to probate.
My job shadow at Willow Legal Group was an amazing experience. I did not previously know the ins and outs of wills, trusts, and probate. I got to experience consultations, signings, and drafting. I got to put together an estate planning portfolio, which contained many different documents such as the power of attorney, pour over will, and trust documents. I learned that working directly with clients makes up only a small portion of the daily job. Watching Megan and Lindsay interact and help clients furthered my interest in becoming a lawyer. What they do truly makes an impact on people's lives, and that is the kind of difference I want to make.
On Monday, they had an admin day. They are a very small firm, so just Lindsay and Megan work full time; but they have a remote assistant who is a law student in the Philippines. They talked about marketing, since they are a relatively new firm, and how the community plays into that. The next few days consisted of mostly filling out and organizing estate plans, with a few client calls and meetings. We discussed representing a family, who recently lost their father, about the probate process. The goal is to take care of the legal proceedings, so that the family has the time and space to mourn their loss. I also sat in on a will signing, which is a big deal. I put together signing gifts, which WLG gives their clients after a signing to thank them. On Thursday night, they held a small event/presentation. This event is mainly geared towards mothers, and was called "Wine and Wills." They helped talk to the women about their contingency plan and how estate law works. The wine aspect of the event is meant to create a more relaxed environment, especially with such a difficult topic. On Friday, we met with the other estate planner in the area; he is older and looking to reduce his workload before retiring. They discussed referrals, and since Megan specializes in elder law, he said he would use them as a referral for that.
