Rethinking Science, Technology, and Care in the Age of Multiple Disasters
The 2024 Korean Association of STS (KASTS) Annual Conference will be held in Seoul, South Korea, from December 6th to 8th, 2024, in the form of an international conference. This year, KASTS invites submissions for papers that align with the conference theme, entitled “Rethinking Science, Technology, and Care in the Age of Multiple Disasters.”
The longstanding contemplation by Science and Technology Studies (STS) on the role of science and technology as systems for recognizing and intervening in the world is evolving. We are moving toward a critical reflection on the interconnectedness of these systems with the fabric of our daily lives. This reflection transcends the ethical discourse confined to the 'normative duty of care among humans' and expands into a broader, non-normative concept of care that upholds the world and sustains all aspects of our collective lives. In an age marked by overlapping crises—ecological, climatic, social inequality, and the unraveling of safety nets—there is an urgent need for the scholarly community to engage in this dialogue. How should science and technology be harnessed, critiqued, and reimagined to navigate and mitigate the complexities of such multifaceted disasters? We invite global scholars from the STS field and related disciplines to submit papers that probe the intersections of disaster and care.
