Braids have been a part of human culture for over 5,000 years, originating in Africa, Egypt, and Greece. In many African tribes, braids symbolized status, age, and identity, with styles like cornrows and Fulani braids dating back centuries.
During the transatlantic slave trade, braids were used for survival, sometimes mapping escape routes. In the 20th century, the Black Power Movement revived Afrocentric styles, making braids a symbol of cultural pride.
Today, braids are both a fashion statement and a protective hairstyle, evolving into modern styles like knotless braids and bohemian locs while maintaining deep cultural roots
