Throughout my academic journey, two significant experiences have shaped my understanding of cultural awareness, adaptability, and global perspectives: my Global Citizenship and Social Responsibility class (EDTE 202) and studying abroad in Florence, Italy. Both experiences provided me with unique insights into what it means to become a global citizen, emphasizing the importance of embracing cultural differences, reflecting on personal growth, and understanding the interconnectedness of global business and society. The artifacts associated with each experience—the Global Citizenship journal and my study abroad journal—serve as tangible representations of my growth and the profound impact these experiences had on my worldview.
The Global Citizenship and Social Responsibility class was an eye-opening experience that pushed me to critically examine my role in a globally connected world. The journal assignment became a powerful tool for self-reflection, allowing me to track my evolving thoughts and realizations throughout the semester. Through weekly entries, I explored topics such as cultural awareness, ethical responsibility, and the social impact of businesses on a global scale. One of the most transformative aspects of this assignment was recognizing my own biases and understanding how they shaped my perceptions of different cultures.
This reflection process challenged me to become more open-minded and empathetic, encouraging me to seek out diverse perspectives and embrace the value of inclusivity. It also reinforced the idea that being a global citizen is not just about recognizing differences but also about actively engaging with them to foster mutual understanding and respect. By critically analyzing case studies and participating in discussions, I was able to connect theoretical concepts to real-world applications, further strengthening my commitment to global awareness. The class reinforced that becoming a global citizen requires not only understanding cultural differences but also actively promoting positive change within communities.

Studying abroad in Florence, Italy further deepened my understanding of what it means to be a global citizen. Living in a foreign country presented both exciting opportunities and unexpected challenges, pushing me to adapt to a new culture and way of life. My study abroad journal became a vital space for processing these experiences, much like the journal I kept in my Global Citizenship class. Through daily reflections, I documented moments of cultural discovery, such as learning the Italian language, navigating social norms, and observing the emphasis on quality and craftsmanship in Italian fashion. These reflections allowed me to embrace the unfamiliar rather than resist it, ultimately enhancing my appreciation for the beauty of cultural differences.
Additionally, my fashion class in Florence provided valuable insight into the global fashion industry, highlighting how Italian heritage and sustainability practices influence international markets. This experience broadened my understanding of the interconnectedness between culture and business, reinforcing the lessons I had learned in my Global Citizenship class. The immersive nature of studying abroad required me to apply the theoretical knowledge I had gained in the classroom to real-life experiences, making my learning more impactful and tangible. Every interaction, from ordering food in Italian to navigating the local markets, was an opportunity to practice adaptability and deepen my cultural awareness.
Both experiences emphasized the importance of adaptability and the power of self-reflection in personal growth. The consistent journaling process not only allowed me to document my thoughts but also helped me recognize how my mindset was shifting over time. In both the classroom and abroad, I learned to approach new environments with curiosity and an open heart, breaking free from preconceived notions and embracing the beauty of diversity. The artifacts from each experience serve as lasting reminders of this journey, capturing my transformation into a more globally conscious and empathetic individual.
Through journaling, I was able to track my progress, from initial moments of discomfort to eventual feelings of belonging and appreciation for my surroundings. This reflective practice helped me internalize the lessons I was learning, making them more meaningful and long-lasting. It also reinforced the importance of lifelong learning and the willingness to adapt to new experiences with an open mind.
Moreover, these experiences highlighted the significance of understanding how businesses operate on a global scale. The Global Citizenship class emphasized ethical responsibility and the social impact of businesses, while my fashion class in Florence demonstrated how cultural heritage and sustainability play a crucial role in shaping international markets. This connection deepened my appreciation for the global fashion industry and inspired me to approach my future career with a more socially responsible and culturally aware mindset.
Studying global fashion firsthand in Italy gave me an appreciation for the craftsmanship, artistry, and heritage embedded in the industry. Observing how Italian businesses prioritize sustainability and quality over mass production shifted my perspective on consumer culture and ethical consumption. These insights reinforced the principles of ethical responsibility I had explored in my Global Citizenship class, proving that businesses can be both profitable and socially responsible when they integrate cultural values and sustainability into their practices.
A crucial similarity between these two experiences was the emphasis on stepping outside of my comfort zone. In my Global Citizenship class, I learned about the importance of engaging with different perspectives and questioning my preconceived notions. Studying abroad forced me to put this into practice, as I had to navigate unfamiliar environments, communicate across language barriers, and adapt to a different way of life.
One of the most significant personal growth moments I experienced abroad was learning to embrace solitude and independence. Being in a foreign country away from my usual support system challenged me to become more self-reliant and confident in my abilities. This personal growth was mirrored in my Global Citizenship class, where I was encouraged to think critically about my role in a globalized world and how I could contribute to positive change.
Ultimately, the connection between my Global Citizenship and study abroad experiences lies in their shared emphasis on embracing cultural differences, reflecting on personal growth, and understanding the global landscape of business and society. The artifacts—the journals and final assignments—serve as windows into my evolving perspective, capturing the moments of realization and transformation that have shaped who I am today. These experiences have not only expanded my worldview but also instilled in me a lifelong commitment to being an active, empathetic, and globally conscious citizen.
As I continue my academic and professional journey, I will carry forward the invaluable lessons of adaptability, ethical responsibility, and cultural appreciation that these experiences have taught me. I now understand that being a global citizen is not just about experiencing the world, it is about engaging with it meaningfully, embracing its diversity, and striving to contribute positively to the interconnected society we all share.
This key insight reflects my pathway of professional and civic engagement by demonstrating how my academic and cultural experiences have shaped my commitment to ethical responsibility, cultural awareness, and global perspectives. My journey highlights the importance of embracing diversity and adaptability in both personal growth and professional practice, particularly in the fashion industry. These experiences have not only deepened my understanding of global interconnectedness but also reinforced my desire to contribute in a meaningful way to society and the business world, aligning my professional goals with a broader sense of social responsibility.
