Small-cells: These are smaller versions of macro base-stations that operate at lower powers. Femtocells are a type of small cells that reuse the cable backhaul and are used indoors. Small cell deployments are not coordinated but employ the same access technology as macro cells, resulting in several new challenges for interference and radio resource management that are different from those of WiFi. We have designed novel and efficient solutions in this respect that are applicable to small cells in general and have also protyped them on an OFDMA-based network of four small cells (employing WiMAX).

Advanced Spectrum and QoS Management: Several new features such as shared/unlicensed spectrum access, carrier aggregation, device-device communication, 3D beamforming, etc. are being introduced as part of next generation mobile cellular networks. We explore and understand what these technologies mean for the network as such and design efficient solutions to realize their potential.

Relays: Next generation standards are interested in two-hop relay networks for increasing both the coverage and capacity of mobile networks. Resource management solutions developed for conventional one-hop mobile cellular networks do not directly apply to these relay networks. In this regard, we have developed several movel resource management solutions addressing various aspects relating to OFDMA and data traffic.
