As a student, my professors and mentors encourage me to be curious, offer a sense of belonging within the academic community, and build my confidence to pursue my goals. Progressing through my educational journey, I realize that the most impactful educators employ various strategies that go beyond the classroom to best serve their students. My experiences as a student and legacy as a third-generation teacher create my teaching philosophy which centers around three principles: experiential learning, real-world applications, and growth mindsets.
As the Coastal and Marine Sciences Institute’s (CMSI) 2023-2024 Lead Mentor, I designed and taught two courses facilitating research and career discovery in UCD undergraduates (3 credit hours total, 50 students total). I developed course curricula that merged real-world applications (case studies from labs at UCD & Bodega Marine Lab) with experiential learning techniques (leading a field trip to BML & hosting interviews with 6 professionals across the career sectors in marine science) to training growth mindsets (meeting individually with students on reflection assignments). Additionally, I designed a survey in collaboration with teaching Prof. Gerhart and Dr. Hom to capture students’ increase of empathy, self-identity, and confidence within marine science. I presented these results at the 2024 CMSI Symposium which will inform future iterations of both courses. Finally, I have been nominated for the Outstanding Graduate Teaching Award for both courses (2024, 2025) and am excited to guide the future Lead Mentors.
Faculty Mentors: Moose O'Donnell, Anne Todgham, Ellie Fairbairn, Carole Hom, and Laci Gerhart (all mentors are based at UC Davis)
Celebrating an end of a wonderful tenure as CMSI's Lead Mentor 2023-2024 with Dr. Moose O'Donnell and Dr. Anne Todgham.
