Karluway Development Association in the Americas (KDAA), formerly Karluway Development Association USA Inc (KDA), is a US-based and registered 501(c)3 nonprofit that was started in 1983 by Liberians, West Africans who once lived in the Karluway District of Maryland County, and, who, after visiting the area post civil war, were profoundly saddened by the conditions of the district’s current inhabitants. The challenges in the district are many. The Karluway District of Liberia is hard to access even under the best of circumstances, as road conditions are poor. During the rainy season, the region is essentially cut off from Liberia proper and essentially forced to function as a separate country. The Liberian government is the Karluway region’s primary source of income, development, support, and security. And with every passing year, the region becomes weaker and more dependent on the government. We, the members of KDAA, believe that there’s another way — a better way; where we mobilize to alleviate these disparities.
