At the age of 16, she was signed to a recording company. Some of the tracks recorded here made it onto South African Music charts. She also got plenty exposure on TV and radio stations.

At the age of 17, Karen competed at the World Championships of Performing Arts in Los Angeles, where she won the title "Rock Champion of the World" for an own composition number that she performed.
