Dedicated to Václav Havel, Catastrophe is a minimalist allegory for totalitarian control written by Samuel Backett which I staged at Natmandal, Dhaka University last February. The plot follows a Director and Assistant as they treat a silent Protagonist as a mere object, molding his body into a display of absolute misery. While the play meticulously strips the individual of his dignity for the audience's gaze, it concludes with a profound act of existential defiance. As the applause fades, the Protagonist slowly raises his head to look directly at the viewers, reclaiming his agency and proving that while a regime can manipulate the body, it cannot crush the human will or the spirit of resistance.
