Born into a family with some relatively unique psychic traits, Kang had a plenty troublesome childhood. Her family - or rather, clan - was torn into two parties supporting ideals quite contradictory to each other, with one side wishing to keep their traditions alive and nurturing the gift that was given to them, while the other looking to abandon their heritage that they claimed has been long obsolete. Over the generations, the divide only grew greater, with the nonconformist side who wished to adapt to modern times slowly becoming the majority. By the time Kang was a teenager, she was the last remaining member of the clan who refused to give up on her special ability. Everyone else was either “convinced” or conveniently “removed”, including Kang’s parents whose assassination was disguised as an unfortunate car accident. After becoming aware of the truth behind the tragedy, her view of the clan only grew more sour, and her reluctance to adapt to their ways became even stronger. Perhaps it was just childish naivety and optimism, or merely a blind and stubborn desire, but she refused to let herself be led down such a dubious path. The complete rejection of cooperation, along with the lack of interest in meeting a fate similar to her parents, however, left her with a singular option, which was to escape the shackles that they were trying to force upon her and sever all ties with the remainder of her clan.
With no family to rely on, but still being too young to take proper care of herself on her own, Kang decided to turn to the only people she knew could keep her safe - her acquaintances at the police whom she met through her parents. While initially reluctant, the detective couple took her in in the end, and understanding her situation, decided not to inquire too much about the matter either. While this new life meant that she had to give up on much of the luxury and comfort that her family home provided, it was a sacrifice that she was willing to make, and even if it was a rather shaky start, it didn’t take long for her to find her ways to cope with it. This was around the time when she discovered her fondness of drinking and gambling as well, being especially talented at the latter, even without her special ability (that she did not shy away from making use of regardless). Most of the money she earned she spent on things she otherwise never would have been able to afford under her new circumstances, such as the plethora of stylish clothes that could barely even fit into her wardrobe, her training equipment that constantly broke and got worn out by strenuous use, and her motorcycle that she would diligently maintain and upgrade over the years.
However, while even the shift to a more down-to-earth lifestyle brought its fair share of changes to her life, the greatest influence on her was probably her closeness to the police detectives. Most evenings - when they were home for dinner - she’d listen to their stories about various crime cases, and how many criminals were often untouchable because of their reputation, surreal nature, or simply because of the power they held. It slowly opened her eyes to the foul and corrupt world she lived in, and made her realize that there were many more like her clan, with them being far from the worst in the first place. This realization gave birth to a spark within her, a growing desire to stand up to this corruption, and help to spare others of their misery and suffering caused by such injustice. It also made her realize that ironically, to some degree, she was also what she hated, and while she never admitted it to the couple nor could she do anything about it in hindsight, from that point, she refrained from cheating in games as long as money was involved.
Her interest would also drag deeper into her involvement with the police, and while she never considered officially joining or going through the long and tedious process of police education and training, she was brought along for investigations more and more often. As time passed, she proved to be quite capable, with her common sense often leading to correct deductions and her keen senses being a valuable asset in general. Yet, her greatest point was likely her physical prowess that put any adult man to shame. The long years of intense martial training steeled her body and soul, and let her master the style that she once inherited from her parents. All this allowed her to be frighteningly efficient at takedowns, but the disappointingly little resistance that most criminals could put up only made her yearn for more - a hunger for fighting that seemed to be near insatiable.
As she grew older and more self sufficient, her wanderlust started to slowly chew her up on the inside. Not once in her life she has set foot outside of her city, and while it was quite considerable in size, it still only had so much to offer. She has seen all the places, met more people than what she could count, heard about and assisted in numerous cases - yet even those started to become way too simple and boring. More and more rumours started to reach her about a city called Kagamihara, where a life even more bustling than her hometown seemed to be accompanied by mysteries of all kinds. The more she heard, the more she felt like that is where she was destined to be, and eventually, she could no longer stand to stay put. Leaving the people she ended up calling her family behind once more, she set out on her journey that would likely change her life, with only her new apartment that she bought ahead of time and a tip about a certain police detective to start out with.
