From a young age, my intrigue with the healthcare system started as a young child as I always enjoyed going to the doctor’s office, watching them work, and asking a multitude of questions. I have always been extremely driven to provide service, be of help to others, and work well with others. Growing up I knew about doctors and nurses, but I was unaware of other career options. When I got to college I was introduced to the Physician Assistant (PA) role and immediately clicked with that as my future career path.
I started at UCF as a Biology major but switched over to Health Sciences during my freshman year. I switched majors because health sciences had courses that would be crucial for preparing me as a future health professional. My pre-clinical coursework, alongside my passion for learning, has supplied me with foundational comprehension to be successful in the PA program.
My dedication to serving others plays a part in my collegiate leadership experience as a UCF Housing Resident Assistant. Skills such as effective teamwork, conflict resolution, communication, and maintaining a professional image are all integral to my future career. Another important aspect I learned was how to navigate challenging situations and implement constructive feedback to grow in the role. Furthermore, this leadership role strengthened my perseverance and resilience as setbacks occur in any venture.
High-impact learning has been an essential characteristic of my academic courses. As a Burnett Honors scholar, any honors class upholds high-impact learning as an important feature, especially with upper-level courses. A notable high-impact class for me was Microbiology. Not only was it incredibly challenging and jam-packed with information, but it was also very interesting to learn about and a major prerequisite course for PA school. I absorbed the skills of healthier studying habits, time management, and listening attentively.
Lastly, collegiate volunteering experience was an integral part of my experience with the assistance of the organization, Association of Pre-Physician Assistants (APPA). APPA was a club that not only introduced the Physician Assistant role, but also helped me find my future career passion including learning the fundamentals of being a PA, the application process, and formed a sense of community. Active listening, teamwork, and drive to aid others were some of the skills that APPA helped me cultivate and maintain. I am planning to work towards diversifying my hands-on medical knowledge as I took my undergraduate years to solely focus on academics.
My drive to serve others, collegiate volunteering and leadership experiences, and high-impact learning have been fundamental features preparing me for Physician Assistant school. I am thrilled to continue learning inside and outside the classroom and make a change in the world.
