Originally from the Kikamba -speaking community of Kenya, Mbiti studied in Uganda, the United Kingdom and the United States, earning his doctorate in 1963 from the University of Cambridge, UK. He also taught religion and theology at the Makerere University in Uganda. Mbiti served as director of the Ecumenical Institute at Bossey, Switzerland from 1974 to 1980.

The translation of the Bible was done word for word, from the original Greek scriptures to Kiikamba, with references done to verify every detail. It took close to eight months for Prof. Mbiti to complete the work and almost ten years for him to see it come to fruition. He went ahead to donate sixty (60) copies of the bible to AIC Mulango Primary School.

Speaking at the same event Chief Justice Hon. Dr. Willy Mutunga expressed his awe at the quality of work done by the Bureau to produce the bible. Dr. Mutunga said that he looked forward to seeing the Kenyan Constitution translated into Kikamba.
