What does community service mean to me? Community is being a part of something bigger than myself. It means learning to connect and being with people who share the same characteristics as me. Service is helping and doing work for someone else through volunteer work. By serving the community, it has enriched my life and positively impacted my perspective on many groups of people. Helping the community is an opportunity for me to grow as a person and to better understand how I fit into the world around me. Service will raise awareness about specific topics and improve life skills.
In high school, many of the clubs that I was a part of participated in major community services. During the winter months, I assisted in creating blankets for children in women’s shelters and for refugees. The women’s empowerment club at my high school worked to create care bags for a local women’s shelter. My friends and I attended “Feed My Starving Children,” which is a company that specializes in creating food packages for children and families in need. The Black Student Union at my high school hosted a socks, gloves, and coat drive for low-income black neighborhoods.
During my time in community service, I indirectly served those from other countries, domestic violence victims, children, less fortunate people, and those in need. Through my time in service, I met many families with young children who were teaching their children the good of volunteering and community service. I would like to believe that the people that I served were very thankful for all that I did during my time in service. I believe that the community service that I have done has allowed me to look at my life a bit differently. Gratitude is what I feel when I am able to do community service. I am able to provide my service to others who need it.
Professionalism, teamwork, and detail orientation are qualities that I have acquired from my time in community service. Through service, I had the opportunity to work alongside professionals and learn from them. Working as a team is beneficial to the overall goal of the service. When teamwork occurs, the job gets done more efficiently. When serving, it is crucial to make sure that everything occurring is done fairly and consistently. This is what detail orientation consists of.
Community service has allowed me to meet people with deep passion. Passion is something I value. When I see people pursuing their passion, it makes me want to find and follow my passions. Seeing other people happy, even the people that I’m helping, makes me happy. It makes me want to pursue things of my certain interests. Serving the community is something I do see in my future. I hope to continue to volunteer and help those in need.
