ISSonVIS 2026—Emotions and Map

ISSonVIS 2026 packed a lot into two days on emotions and maps. The opening got moving fast. Georg Gartner laid out how emotion and meaning sit within cartographic theory, which gave the rest of the program something to hang on to. Jiří Pánek then took it into emotional mapping and made the concept concrete, close enough to practice that you could see how it would actually get used. The afternoon stayed in that territory: human-centered mapping, perception, and how people relate to the spaces around them. By the end of day one, the emotion-recognition and environmental-perception talks had pulled theory and practice into the same conversation. Day 2 was more varied. The session on satire and aggression in maps was a welcome shift in tone. After that, it moved into change, emergencies, and emotional data in spatial decision-making. The closing talks on design choices and prompt-based cartography landed where things are heading with AI in cartography. Two days, broad coverage, and the emotions-and-maps thread held across the whole thing.
