What is education; knowledge in basic skills, academics, technical, discipline, citizenship or is it something else? Our society says only academic basics are important and that is based on collecting knowledge without understanding its value. How about the processing of knowledge, using inspiration, visionary ambitions, creativity, risk, ability to bounce back from failure, motivation? Most education institutions don’t consider these skills. These skills are associated with understanding the value of knowledge. There is a huge disconnected gap and this is a problem for high school students in particular.

Over 40 % of class 3 students cannot recognize numbers higher than 10, and less than half of class 3 students are able to do simple subtraction
Less than 50 % of students in the 3rd through 5th standards can read simple sentences in their own language, and only 10 % can read simple sentences in English

The definition of ‘livelihood’ has been extensively discussed among academics and development practitioners (see for instance Ellis, 1998, Batterbury, 2001; Chambers and Conway, 1992; Carney, 1998; Bernstein, 1992; Francis, 2000, 2002; Radoki, 2002). There is a consensus that livelihood is about the ways and means of ‘making a living’. The most widely accepted definition of livelihood stems from the work of Robert Chambers and Gordon Conway: ‘a livelihood comprises the capabilities, assets (including both material and social resources) and activities required for a means of living’ (Carney, 1998:4). Livelihoods are also about creating and embracing new opportunities.
