By 10 Kalatungan
This Project Kalatungan initiative examines four Filipino literary works using five analytical frameworks: formalism, reader-response, feminism, Marxism, and moralism. By utilizing these various viewpoints, we seek to reveal more profound interpretations of each narrative and enhance the appreciation for Filipino literature. Our goal for this project is to enrich academic discussions and encourage critical interaction with literature among our colleagues and the broader community.
Literary criticism is like using different filters on a camera to capture a photograph. Each filter changes how the picture looks, emphasizing certain colors or details. These "filters" are called literary lenses, and they offer unique perspectives for analyzing and interpreting texts.
Here are some of the well-known lenses you can employ:
-Formalist Lens: This lens concentrates on the text itself, examining aspects such as language, structure, and literary devices. It's akin to analyzing the architecture of a building and how its components interact.
-Reader-Response Lens: This lens emphasizes the personal experiences and interpretations of the reader regarding the text. It poses the question, "What emotions and thoughts does this story evoke in me, and why?"
-Feminist Lens: This lens investigates the representation of gender and the societal expectations tied to it within the text. It may consider how female characters are depicted or how gender power dynamics are portrayed.
-Marxist Lens: This lens scrutinizes the text through the framework of social class and economic power dynamics. It may explore how various classes are depicted or how the text mirrors social inequalities.
-Moralist Lens: This lens looks into the ethical and moral aspects present in the text. It might examine the decisions and actions of characters, their consequences, and the overarching message regarding morality.
By utilizing these diverse lenses, we can achieve a more profound and intricate understanding of literature, delving into its many layers of meaning and significance.
