Every now and then, you stumble across a place that reminds you why supporting local businesses is so rewarding.
Not because it's the biggest restaurant in town.
Not because it's gone viral on social media.
But because every single part of the experience feels genuine.
That was exactly how I felt after my first visit to Sunz Kitchen.
Living on Vorster Avenue in Glenanda means they're literally a three-minute walk from my apartment, yet somehow I'd never been there before. One afternoon, completely on a whim, I decided to walk in and see what everyone had been talking about.
I wasn't expecting much.
I certainly wasn't expecting one meal to completely change my opinion on butter chicken.
I've travelled and eaten at Indian restaurants in Johannesburg, Sandton, Pretoria, Durban and Cape Town over the years, and butter chicken has always been one of those dishes I'll order whenever it's on the menu. I've had some that were decent, some that were forgettable, and a handful that really stood out.
Then I tried Sunz Kitchen's.
From the very first bite, I knew this wasn't going to be an ordinary meal. The chicken was beautifully tender, the sauce was rich, creamy and full of flavour without overpowering the spices, and everything tasted as though it had been prepared with genuine care. There was a balance to the dish that is surprisingly difficult to find, and before I knew it, I was making sure not a single drop of that sauce went to waste.
It takes a lot to impress me when it comes to butter chicken.
Sunz Kitchen managed to do exactly that.
As incredible as the food was, what stayed with me even more was the people behind it. Sun welcomed me with such warmth that it immediately felt less like walking into a restaurant and more like visiting someone's home. Her husband was equally friendly and welcoming, and together they've created an atmosphere that makes you feel comfortable from the moment you walk through the door. Their daughter was just as lovely, and seeing the three of them working together reminded me why family-owned businesses are so special. You can genuinely feel the pride they take in what they do, and that warmth carries through into every interaction.
It wasn't just a meal.
It was an experience.
The kind of experience that makes you leave already knowing you'll be back. And I most definitely will be.
While the butter chicken has set an incredibly high standard, I've already decided what I'm ordering alongside it next time.
Potato samoosas
Cheese and corn samoosas
I've been thinking about them ever since I left, and I have absolutely no intention of making the same mistake twice by not ordering them.
Thank you, Fauzia, for your patience, encouragement and passion for what you do.
Sometimes all it takes is one visit to know you've found somewhere special.
Sunz Kitchen did exactly that for me.
If you're anywhere near Glenanda... Or honestly, if you're willing to drive for genuinely exceptional food... I cannot recommend giving Sunz Kitchen a try highly enough.
Between the incredible food, the warm hospitality from Sun, her husband and their daughter, and the welcoming atmosphere they've created, it's the kind of place that reminds you why some of the very best dining experiences come from local family-run restaurants.
One visit was all it took.
I already know it won't be my last.
