Hi there! There are at least twenty different ways to spell my name (my teachers have found them all), but you've found the only KAYT-lin who is a student journalist at Strath Haven High School. Welcome to my portfolio.
I've worn a lot of hats at The Panther Press, from copy editor to health and sciences editor to managing editor of web then print, and finally editor-in-chief. It means I've become proficient at bribing kids with candy like the editing fairy godmother I strive to be every day. But most of all, it means I've learned why they say you only know something if you can teach it.
Freshman and sophomore year, I built up basic skills in reporting and interviewing. Junior and senior year, I learned how to share those skills with others. I had an incredible support system as an underclassman, so in the very first leadership application I submitted, I predicted my future.
"I had a great time this year, especially since I started out as a freshman with no experience. Being a journalist is now part of my identity. Collaborating with students older than me has really taught me a lot, and I want future SHHS students to be able to love the Panther Press the way that I do."
Though I've changed over the years, the love I have for journalism hasn't wavered and neither has my interest in sharing that with others. I hope this portfolio is able to convey those tenets of who I am.
Below is everything I've written for The Panther Press, from my freshman year of 2022-2023 to now in the 2025-2026 school year! Constantly being updated.
Special thank you to our adviser Ms. Plows—everything I know about organization, accountability, and how to color code a presentation comes from her.
EXTRA gratitude to the very best team ever.
Every single year I've been on this staff, being with these people has felt like being home. (Thank you to Matt Chen '23 and Julia Gray '23 for eating lunch with me for the entirety of my freshman year second semester. Four years later, I'm in your shoes as a senior and I still miss you guys an inordinate amount.)
I firmly believe that the best of Haven is in this staff. These are kids who have so much going on, but they still choose to do this work for no academic credit whatsoever. They are the kindest, dedicated, and most diligent people you will ever meet—and they never cease to exceed my expectations.
They sign up for stories on weekends with a day's turnaround. They always chase after the facts. They ask for help when they need it.
So to everyone who shows up to Room 223 at 3:05 on Tuesdays...never let anyone make you feel like this job is pointless. You're changing this crazy world with your words, for the better.
