His script, originally called Love Hurts (after a novel-within-the-film), follows Nick Curran (Michael Douglas) a tortured detective trying to solve the murder of a wealthy man who was brutally murdered with an ice pick during sex while tied to his bed with a white silk scarf. Nick becomes entangled with the man's girlfriend, Catherine Tramell (Sharon Stone), a brilliant novelist who has written a book about a woman who murders her lovers using the same method.

"I had...written three movies where women were manipulated by men they loved--Jagged Edge, Betrayed, and Music Box. I thought it would be fun to flip the dynamic: a movie about a man being manipulated by a woman who is brilliant, omnisexual, and evil."

In the document, Eszterhas describes how, in a chess game worthy of Catherine Tramell herself, he leaked the script to his friend Mike Medavoy who ran Orion Pictures. Medavoy's near-immediate offer of $1 million allowed Eszterhas's agents to launch a bidding war which won him the sum of $3 million, far outshining The Last Boy Scout's $1.75 million.
