James "Andrew" Mitchell Obituary
James "Andrew" Mitchell, 84, passed away peacefully on September 13, 2026, at the Ohio Health Hospice. He was born in Cambridge, Ohio, a few weeks before Pearl Harbor, on October 16, 1941. and was preceded in death by his parents Francis Moffett Mitchell and Mary (Pyles) Mitchell, as well as his brother "Moff" Mitchell.
Andrew pursued dentistry as a career, following in the footsteps of his father, and was a proud Muskingum College graduate and subsequently a graduate of Ohio State Dental College. He joined the Air Force during the Vietnam War, where he performed dentistry on the soldiers behind the lines in Thailand. He eventually returned to Cambridge to practice family dentistry for 41 years.
In 1995 he met his beloved partner and husband of 31 years, Brad Colegate. Andrew and Brad shared a host of passions like gardening, travel, theater and music, but also faith in God and singing in the bass section of the choir. Andrew, however, was the "en plein air" artist who traveled with his paints, always drawing admirers as he painted all over the world.
In addition to his husband Brad, survivors include his dear nieces, Stacy Seligman and Marcy Perini, and their children: Emily, Patrick, Victoria and Chris and Jon, and one great-great niece Clara.
A celebration of life will be Saturday, October 17, at 11:00 am at King Avenue United Methodist Church, 299 King Ave., Columbus, OH 43201 with visitation from 10:00-11:00 am. Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to NNEMAP food pantry, where Andrew worked as a volunteer.
