I see pairs of elders everywhere. In Prague, they were fellow passengers on a tram, whom I watched disembark in a residential neighborhood and set out on the Work. A fair Hebrew wife named Susanna was falsely accused by lecherous voyeurs. As she bathes privately (having sent her attendants away) in her locked and walled garden, two elders, having previously said goodbye to each other, bump into each other again when they spy on her bathing. The two men realize they both lust for Susanna. When she makes her way back to her house, they accost her, demanding she have sexual intercourse with them. When she refuses, they have her arrested, claiming that the reason she sent her maids away was to be alone as she was having intercourse with a young man under a tree.

She refuses to be blackmailed and is arrested and about to be put to death for adultery when the young Daniel interrupts the proceedings, shouting that the elders should be interrogated to prevent the death of an innocent.

The story was frequently painted from about 1470. Susanna is the subject of paintings by many artists, including (but not limited to) Lorenzo Lotto (Susanna and the Elders, 1517), Guido Reni, Rubens, Van Dyck (Susanna and the Elders), Tintoretto, Rembrandt, Tiepolo, and Artemisia Gentileschi (Susanna and the Elders, 1610). Some treatments, especially in the Baroque period, emphasize the drama, others concentrate on the nude; a 19th-century version by Francesco Hayez (National Gallery, London) has no elders visible at all.[11] The Uruguayan painter Juan Manuel Blanes also painted two versions of the story, most notably one where the two voyeurs are not in sight, and Susanna looks to her right with a concerned expression on her face.

Pablo Picasso, too, rendered the subject in the mid-twentieth century, depicting Susanna much as he depicts his other less abstract reclining nudes. The elders are depicted as paintings hanging on the wall behind her. The picture, painted in 1955, is part of the permanent collection at the Museo Picasso Mlaga.

The Book of Elders is a book that was made by the elders of the Moonlands in order to trap Agram within the Core. The book gave clues to guide Tony, Edyn, and Strag to find the Dreamstones. Once all of the Dreamstones are inserted into the book's cover, the Core Glyph is formed and can imprison Shadow Magi in the Core.

Karl Pillemer's new book 30 Lessons for Living results from an effort to collect wisdom from more than 1,200 older Americans. Guest host Tony Cox speaks with Pillemer and Helene Rosenblatt, one of the elders featured in the book, about what we can learn from our elders and why we don't listen to them more often.

Older Americans have gone through the biggest events of the 20th and so far the 21st centuries, from the Great Depression onto two world wars, Vietnam, and the current Great Recession. Yet Americans often choose to get advice from countless self help books rather than ask the very people who have, simply put, been there done that. That's what drove Professor Karl Pillemer and Cornell University's Legacy Project to survey more than 1,200 older Americans to ask them to share their collective wisdom.

COX: Karl, speaking of holidays, we are in holiday mode right now. Is there anything in the book or any one of these elders that you included in the book who spoke to this, the issue of families coming together and overcoming resentment, hurt feelings, the kinds of things that tend to pop up when families gather around the holidays?

PILLEMER: Yes, absolutely, in fact there were several different lessons which I think are extremely appropriate to what families are experiencing today. One of the most important lessons is to avoid the kind of brutal lasting rifts which occur between parents and children. And that was a term people use - avoid the rift. And they also argue that people should say things now. So one regret that many older people have is not having said something which should have said. And so those are two lessons in the book. I would put it together and say that you can use holiday times when families are gathering together to patch up old grievances, extend and olive branch if there's been a rift or a break in the family. The unhappiest elders I spoke with are people who had had a permanent rupture with a child and for whom that child was no longer a part of their life. And a key lesson was to do what you can to patch that up. And it seems to me that a day like today is a great day to start and it meets those two lessons of saying important things while people are around, to say them and doing your best reconcile with estranged family members. e24fc04721
