Skills: Certified Nursing Assistants (CNA's) (also referred to as nursing aids or nursing assistants) work in home health care, residential living, nursing homes, and other medical facilities completing tasks such as:
Provide hands-on patient care and routine task assistance
Measure patients' vital signs and document their health concerns to share with nurses
Assisting patients when they use the toilet, bathe, dress, and eat their meals
Help with turning, repositioning, and transferring patients between their beds and wheelchairs

Career Outlook:
Employment of CNA's is projected to grow 4% over the next eight years, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. In 2024, the Median Wage for STNA's was $38,570 per year in Ohio.

Phlebotomists serve in hospitals, outpatient care centers, physician's offices, medical and diagnostic laboratories, and blood banks. Some job responsibilities include:
Drawing blood from patients or blood donors
Explaining their work to help relax patients or donors who feel nervous about having blood drawn
Labeling sterile containers for other samples, such as urine, and instructing patients on proper collection procedures.
Ensuring proper documentation and procedure for blood samples

*The EKG Technician program is part of the Health Career Pathway and is not a standalone program. Students wanting their EKG Technician license must also complete the CCMA program (spring 2027) in order to be eligible for the EKG Technician license.
EKG Technicians perform diagnostic tests that record the heart's electrical activity. They prepare patients for testing, place electrodes, operate EKG equipment, and provide physicians with accurate test results used to help diagnose and monitor heart conditions.
Career Outlook
As the demand for cardiovascular care continues to grow, so does the need for trained EKG Technicians. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of cardiovascular technologists and technicians is projected to grow 3% through 2034, with approximately 3,800 job openings each year nationwide. The median annual wage was $67,260 in 2024.
After earning your Certified EKG Technician (CET) credential, you will have the opportunity to work in a variety of healthcare settings, including hospitals, physician offices, cardiology practices, outpatient clinics, and diagnostic testing centers. EKG training can also enhance qualifications for careers such as Medical Assistant, Patient Care Technician, and Telemetry Technician.

Jefferson County Vocational School Adult Education is offering two HVAC training opportunities designed for individuals entering the HVAC profession as well as current technicians looking to refresh and expand their knowledge.
HVAC 101 provides a broad introduction to the HVAC field, making it an excellent starting point for new technicians while also serving as a valuable refresher for experienced professionals. Students will learn the differences between preventative and reactive maintenance, identify common HVAC system components, and gain an overview of the equipment technicians encounter in the field, including residential and commercial systems, heat pumps, and mini-split systems. Students who successfully complete the course will receive a Certificate of Completion.
Students may also enroll in our EPA 608 Refrigerant Certification course, which prepares participants for the EPA Section 608 certification examination. The course covers refrigerant handling, recovery, recycling, and environmental regulations. Students who successfully pass the certification exam will earn an industry-recognized workforce credential through HVAC Excellence and ESCO Institute, demonstrating the knowledge and qualifications required to work with regulated refrigerants.

With hands-on, career-focused instruction, this program aligns with strong workforce demand—according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (2025), HVAC employment is projected to grow 8% from 2024 to 2034 (faster than average), with a median annual wage of about $59,810 and approximately 40,100 job openings each year, highlighting excellent career opportunities in this high-demand skilled trade.
