It is recommended that students begin taking the ACT/ SAT in December of their Junior year. Try both exams multiple times. Colleges will use the best score submitted for admissions and scholarship consideration. Many schools will use "Superscoring" - the practice of taking your highest individual section scores from different test administrations and combining them to form a new, higher overall score.
Fee waivers are available from Mrs. Brown in the H House for students on the free/reduced lunch program.

There really is no uniform policy about this that can be applied across the board. As with many things in college admissions, it varies by school, score and scholarship requirements. Often, test optional schools still require test scores when awarding merit-based scholarships. Thus, taking either the SAT or ACT would be important. For admission purposes only, if you have assured admission based on the class rank requirements, there would be no need to test other than trying to qualify for merit scholarship awards. These policies are evolving each year. Visit college admissions websites for specific requirements per institution.
