If you want a rugged, stainless-steel frame with extended frequency response for crisp highs and deep travel portability, choose JVC HAS160B; if you need an ultra-lightweight, collapsible design with a two-year warranty and legendary Shure audio heritage for long work sessions, choose Shure SRH145.
• JVC HAS160B: Strengths include a durable stainless-steel headband and a wider frequency range (12–24,000Hz) for detailed highs; the trade-off is its flat-fold on-ear design which may feel tighter on larger heads compared to pivoting cups. Best for travelers who prioritize build durability and extended treble detail.
• Shure SRH145: Strengths feature an ultra-lightweight plastic construction that reduces fatigue and a collapsible mechanism for compact storage; the trade-off is a narrower frequency response (22Hz–17.5kHz) that lacks the extreme high-end extension of the JVC. Best for professionals working from home who need all-day comfort and reliable support.
The JVC HAS160B is built like a tank but feels surprisingly nimble. Its standout feature is the enclosure material: stainless steel. While many competitors in this price bracket rely entirely on plastic or aluminum alloys, JVC has chosen a rugged metal frame that adapts to your head size without losing its shape. This isn't just about looks; it speaks to longevity. If you are someone who tosses headphones into a bag daily, throws them on a desk, or travels frequently between coffee shops and home offices, that steel reinforcement offers peace of mind that other materials simply cannot match. The 30mm Neodymium driver units inside deliver a dynamic sound signature that leans toward clarity, pushing frequencies up to 24,000Hz. This means you will hear details in complex mixes—like the breathiness of a vocal track or the shimmer of cymbals—that smaller drivers might smooth over.
For the remote worker, the noise isolation properties are particularly relevant. The soft earpads create a seal that effectively blocks out ambient office chatter or household distractions. Since these are on-ear headphones with a flat foldable design, they are incredibly easy to slip into a laptop sleeve or backpack pocket. You don't need a dedicated case; the headphones themselves fold down small enough to fit anywhere. However, the "flat" nature of the earpiece shape and the on-ear placement means they sit directly on your cartilage rather than surrounding it. This works beautifully for short bursts of listening or quick calls, but for eight-hour stretches, the pressure points can become noticeable if you have sensitive ears.

You should buy the JVC HAS160B if you value audio fidelity above all else, specifically the ability to hear high-frequency nuances. It is also the right choice if you need a pair of headphones that can survive being dropped, stepped on, or stuffed into a cramped carry-on. The wired connectivity via a standard 3.5mm jack ensures you never have to worry about battery life draining mid-meeting or the hassle of charging cables. But be aware: if you plan to wear these for six hours straight while typing away at a keyboard, the clamping force of the steel headband might require a break-in period before they feel truly comfortable.
The Shure SRH145 takes a different philosophy entirely: it prioritizes weight reduction and ergonomic flexibility. Weighing in at just 5.76 ounces, this is one of the lightest options available for closed-back, on-ear headphones. The enclosure is made of high-quality plastic, which keeps the mass low while maintaining structural integrity. Where the JVC relies on a rigid steel band, Shure uses an adjustable headband and padded ear cups that pivot to fit the unique contours of your head. This design choice is crucial for anyone spending their day glued to a screen. The reduced weight means less gravitational pull on the top of your head, significantly reducing the fatigue that often accompanies heavy headphones during long video conferences or deep-focus writing sessions.
Sound-wise, the SRH145 delivers what Shure is famous for: a balanced, rich bass response with full-range audio. While the frequency range stops at 17.5kHz rather than extending to the ultrasonic levels of the JVC, this doesn't mean the sound is dull. Instead, it focuses on warmth and musicality, making it excellent for monitoring vocals, podcasts, and music where the midrange presence matters more than the absolute highest frequencies. The closed-back design provides good external noise isolation, creating a quiet sanctuary even in a busy home environment. The collapsible design allows the ear cups to swivel and fold inward, making the unit very compact for storage when you aren't wearing it.
This headphone is ideal for the professional who needs a reliable tool for work-from-home scenarios. The inclusion of a two-year manufacturer's warranty is a significant factor here; it signals a level of confidence in the product's durability that few other brands offer in this segment. If a component fails, Shure covers free replacement or repair, which removes a layer of risk for the buyer. The inline volume control is simple and effective, allowing you to manage audio levels without reaching for your device. However, the plastic construction, while lightweight, may not feel as premium or indestructible as the steel frame of the JVC. If you are hard on your gear, the plastic might show wear sooner than the metal alternative.
• Best for extended battery-free reliability → Both are wired, but the JVC's 30mm drivers offer slightly more power handling potential for loud environments, while Shure's lighter build reduces physical strain.
• Best for maximum frequency detail → JVC HAS160B wins with a 12–24,000Hz range, capturing sounds Shure's 22Hz–17.5kHz range might miss.
• Best for all-day comfort → Shure SRH145 takes the lead due to its 5.76-ounce weight and adjustable, pivoting ear cups that distribute pressure more evenly.
• Best for durability and travel → JVC HAS160B features a stainless-steel frame and flat-folding design that resists crushing better than Shure's plastic collapsible build.
• Best for peace of mind/warranty → Shure SRH145 includes a two-year manufacturer's warranty, whereas JVC requires contacting the manufacturer for warranty details.
• Best for noise isolation → Both offer sound isolation, but JVC's tight on-ear fit with soft pads creates a strong seal, while Shure relies on the closed-back design and padding.
• Best for audio clarity in vocals → Shure's balanced tuning emphasizes the midrange, making it superior for podcast listening and voice calls.
• Best for portability → JVC folds flatter for slim pockets, but Shure collapses into a smaller overall volume for bags.
If I were setting up a dedicated workspace for myself today, I would reach for the Shure SRH145. While the JVC HAS160B boasts impressive specs and a rugged steel build, the sheer weight difference and the adjustable ergonomics of the Shure make it the superior choice for the specific use case of work from home. When you are sitting for eight hours a day, every ounce counts. The 5.76-ounce weight of the Shure means I can forget I'm wearing them, whereas the steel frame of the JVC would likely start to press on my temples by the afternoon. Furthermore, the two-year warranty gives me a safety net that is invaluable for a daily driver. I recommend the Shure SRH145 for anyone who values comfort and reliability over the absolute highest frequency extension.
No, neither the JVC HAS160B nor the Shure SRH145 are neckband style; both are traditional on-ear headphones with a headband. They connect via a 3.5mm wired jack, so you won't need to charge batteries, but you will need to manage the cable length around your desk.
These models are not clip-on earbuds; they are over-the-ear style headphones that rest on your ears. Both provide sound isolation through passive sealing with ear pads, which is generally more effective than most clip-on earbuds for blocking out room noise.
While neither is strictly "in-ear" (they are on-ear), the Shure SRH145 is the better option for comfort due to its ultra-lightweight plastic construction and pivoting ear cups that reduce pressure on the head during long meetings.
