About me:
I grew up in the small coastal city of Goleta, CA, just north of Santa Barbara, where I spent most of my time creating art, playing music, surfing, and going to beach bonfires. I graduated from Dos Pueblos High School in 2007, where I excelled in math and writing. I was a Varsity Track & Field athlete specializing in pole vault, discus, shot put, and the occasional sprint and long jump.
Education: I earned my Bachelor's degree in Kinesiology with an emphasis in Exercise Science from California State University Northridge in 2011. I was active in campus life at CSUN, living in the dorms during my freshman year, attending sporting events, and working on campus. I was also a member of the Kinesiology majors club and took part in boxing at the campus gym. CSUN is where I fell in love with the nature of science - the ability to discover and explore through inquiry and scientific study.
I also attended CSUN for the rigorous ACT (Accelerated Collaborative Teaching) credential program where I met a lot of friends and earned my California teaching credential for secondary science. During this time I was a student teacher at Lawrence Middle School as well as at Westlake High School.
Lastly, I also earned my M.A. in Secondary Science Education from CSUN in 2022 during the COVID-19 global pandemic where I performed action research on the topic of "Effectiveness of Computer-based Data Visualization Tools on Students' Ability to Analyze and Interpret Data." This Master's degree helped me to become well versed in the world of Computer-Supported Collaborative Science.
Teaching: I originally had no interest in becoming a teacher and I was set on pursuing a doctorate of physical therapy. I had been working in clinics during and after college and I dreamed of becoming a specialized sports therapist. I even attended several junior colleges after graduating from CSUN so that I could increase my GPA for some of the required courses for my physical therapy school applications. After two years of improving my GPA, I applied to physical therapy schools and was accepted by two of them! Now I had to make a decision, but by this time I was tired of the clinical setting and I had grown fond of the physics and chemistry courses that had been taking. After some deliberation, I decided that physical therapy was not my ultimate destination and I decided to pursue my secondary science teaching credential.
I now teach physical and life science courses at the high school level and love every moment of it. I hope to one day teach a mix of all 3 major sciences: biology, chemistry, and physics.
Science IS fun. Let me show you!
Interests and Hobbies: I pick up new hobbies all the time. Some of my latest include 3D printing and bonsai cultivation. I still, however, love to play guitar, go hiking, running, mountain biking, triathloning, and open water ocean swimming. I am also an active movie enthusiast and I have a strong liking for a good sci-fi book.
Traveling to new places is also one of my favorite things to do when time permits. I traveled all over the United States as a child. As an adult, I have been fortunate enough to visit places like Hawaii, England, Ireland, Denmark, and Sweden! I hope I get to travel again soon and adventure to another faraway place!
My first child Liam was born during the height of the pandemic and he immediately showed us that he is a little bundle of personality with a strong voice. I have another baby girl on the way. Pernthood will definitely be my greatest adventure yet!
