While he states that the chorus is most likely copied, he suggests that the rest of the songs is nothing alike. I actually made a mashup of the two. Making use of spectral analysis, I extracted the instrumental & vocals parts of the two songs, time stretched the Bieber song to fit onto the TOTO song and arranged the parts in a nice way. You can actually hear that, while the verse chords aren't the same and the vibe is fundamentally different, the melodies are actually either very much alike OR are deliberately contrapuntal, which results in the funny duet-passages I was able to create. I find this hilarious and while I'm pretty sure, that the verse similarities are probably by accident, I have no doubt that they actually used "Goin' Home" as a template to build their song on and therefor Joseph Williams and David Paich, who wrote the song, should be credited appropriately. But what do you think? Is this a copyright infringement or does it still fall under "inspiration".

To be fair, the now 21-year-old has been making tracks that are catchy as all get out since his 2010 debut album, My World 2.0. There were some serious jams on that album, but they were jams that Bieber didn't lend much to besides some adolescent vocals. That's not to diminish the fact that they were great pop songs, but comparing his first album, which was released when he was just 14, to the stuff he's putting out now is like night and day. Which you prefer depends on the kind of person you are, and if you're not sure what kind of person that is, you just need to look at your favorite Bieber track to discover the answer.

Insider weighed factors like listenability, lyrical quality, production value, and critic reception to come up with the eight best and eight worst songs of the singer's career thus far, including tracks from his newest album. (Note: Songs from Bieber's Christmas album, "Under the Mistletoe," were not considered.)

"Company" is both one of Bieber's best songs and one of his most underrated. Somehow, it isn't mentioned even once in the "Purpose" album reviews from Rolling Stone, Pitchfork, or Consequence of Sound. I guess it was somehow overshadowed by the sheer number of hits on the album, but it's better than most of them (save for "Sorry").

That "Running Over" stands out from the rest of the songs on "Changes" is not a compliment. Most of the album is head-bobbing music: slightly dull, generally pleasant, well-suited to waft in the background as you do something else.

"Confirmation" is fine. But when you're Justin Bieber, and you've got songs like "All That Matters," "Sorry," and "Company," this kind of snooze-fest just isn't going to cut it. You'll forget what "Confirmation" sounds like as soon as it's over.

He shares these rights with his publisher, which owns a percentage of his composition copyright and his record label, which owns a share of his rights attached to the recording of the songs, sometimes referred to as the master recordings.

This means that when his songs are bought or performed, the share of the income that would have previously been a royalty payment to Bieber, now goes to Hipgnosis. The company is hoping that over time these royalties will exceed the upfront payment it made to Bieber and so it will profit from this investment.

Copyright in the musical composition lasts for 70 years after the death of the creator, so the owner of the copyright can keep receiving royalties for a long time. However, the songs need to be used in order to make an income, so it is a risk.

The risk for Bieber is that, in the long term, he could have made more money from keeping his rights and receiving royalty payments than from the lump-sum payment. To make any more money from music, Bieber will now need to release new songs.

Bieber interviewed his wife, model and Rhode Skin founder Hailey Bieber, for Vogue Australia in February 2023. Hinting at her husband's impending new music, Hailey said, "The new song that you just recorded, I can't stop listening to right now. Nobody knows what that is yet." However, no additional details were provided on any new songs.

In 2021, Hipgnosis bought the royalty rights owned by Winnipeg-born producer Bob Rock on some of Michael Buble's Christmas hits and Metallica's Enter Sandman, and a 50 per cent stake in more than 1,000 songs from 77-year-old Neil Young.
