Getting your marriage license is an important step toward your wedding day. In Connecticut, the process is simple, and you can apply for a marriage license at any town hall or city hall in the state.
Determine Eligibility
Before applying, make sure you meet the following requirements:
Age: Both parties must be at least 18 years old. If either party is under 18, a court order is required.
Residency: You do not need to be a Connecticut resident to apply for a marriage license in the state.
Previous Marriages: If either party has been previously married, you will need to provide the date of divorce or the date your former spouse passed away. This can usually be verified with your divorce decree or a death certificate.
Choose Your Town Hall
You can apply for your marriage license at any town or city hall in Connecticut, not necessarily in the town where you live. However, you must pick up your marriage license from the same location where you applied and the marriage must be held within that city or town.
Fill Out the Application
Both parties must be present to complete the application. The application will ask for basic information such as:
Full names, addresses, and birthdates.
The names of your parents (including mother’s maiden name).
Details about previous marriages (if applicable).
License Appointment
Connecticut marriage licenses are typically issued within two weeks of applying, the final step of the application will be setting the date and time of your appointment to receive your license. You both must be present and bring a valid photo ID (such as a passport or driver’s license) to prove your identity.
You must use your marriage license within 60 days of receiving it, you may use it the same day you receive it if you wish. After the 60th day, the license will expire, and you will need to apply for a new one if you haven’t married yet.
Obtain Certified Copies of Your Marriage Certificate
After your marriage is recorded, you can request certified copies of your marriage certificate. These copies are often necessary for name changes, insurance purposes, and legal documentation. They can usually be requested from the same town hall where you applied for your marriage license.
No Waiting Period: You can marry immediately after receiving your marriage license.
Marriage License Validity: Your marriage license is valid statewide, so you can marry anywhere in Connecticut.
