OCT 28: Shut Down the Game Rally

On Saturday, Oct. 28, students conducted a peaceful sit in on the football field wearing Justice4Ivonne shirts and holding banners that called for Professor del Valle's reinstatement. This action was the taken after sending daily reminders to the Office of the Chancellor about the plan to disrupt the USC vs. Cal game if Professor del Valle was not reinstated by Oct. 27. On the day of the game, UCB administration responded by hiring extra security and police, tackling students to the ground, arresting them, and taking them on caged buses to Santa Rita Jail over 45 minutes away.

OCT 11: ASUC Senate Meeting with UCB Administration

On Wednesday, Oct. 11, the Justice4Ivonne campaign attended the ASUC Senate Meeting to hear Chancellor Christ's response to the Latinx senator's pre-submitted questions about Dr. Ivonne del Valle's reinstatement. The Chancellor once again failed to respond to student concerns by claiming that it was a confidential personnel issue outside of her hands.

In the open forum portion of the meeting, Professor del Valle asked the Chancellor to investigate her claims and stop the punishment. When the Chancellor chose to ignore Professor del Valle in a public forum, the Justice4Ivonne campaign delivered the message that if Professor del Valle was not reinstated by October 27th, the students would shut down the USC game on October 28th.

OCT 6: Disruption of Berkeley Discovery Lecture w/ Chancellor Christ

On Friday, October 6th, UC Berkeley students confronted Chancellor Christ at a Homecoming Lecture in the Chevron Auditorium inside International House. Professor Ivonne's students and allies delivered 48 student and alumni testimonies in support of her reinstatement, as well as copies of all the unanswered letters sent to Chancellor Christ about the case. They asked Chancellor Christ directly when Professor del Valle would be back in the classroom. Rather than engage with the students or acknowledge her role in the mishandling of Professor del Valle's case, Chancellor Christ vilified them for "interrupting" the event and was escorted out the room, leaving the protestors without answers once again.

OCT 4: Colonial Studies Teach-In w/ Professor Ivonne del Valle

On Wednesday, October 4th, around 45 students attended a teach-in with Professor del Valle. The discussion centered on Carlos de Siguenza y Góngora's "Alboroto y motín" about the 1692 anticolonial uprising in New Spain.

Through hosting a public teach-in, students engaged in direct action by creating alternative systems of education. They showed Professor del Valle how much they valued her knowledge by making their own classroom on Memorial Glade and opening it up to the public, so that everyone could experience her incredible teaching style.

SEP 30: Game Day Occupation of the Student Store

After successfully shutting down the student store twice earlier in the week, supporters of Prof. del Valle's reinstatement occupied the student store on Game Day. Chants of "No justice, No peace" made it clear that students would continue to disrupt business as usual for as long as Professor del Valle remained suspended.

SEP 27: Celebration of Student Store Shutdown

The day after the first student store occupation, Justice4Ivonne supporters returned to the store to find that their task had been completed for them by the store employees--the building was already closed in anticipation of their arrival. The university lost another day of profit, and the Justice4Ivonne campaign gained visibility on campus.

SEP 26: Takeover of the Student Store

On Tuesday, Sept 26th, the Justice4Ivonne campaign took over the student store for the day, to interrupt the facade of UC Berkeley's esteemed brand when its administration is actively harming the Latinx student community and retaliating against a cherished Latina professor.

SEP 21: Rally & Blockade of Sather Gate

Our first public rally brought out over 120 students to demand Professor del Valle's reinstatement and testify to her enormous contributions as a scholar, activist, and professor on campus.

Rally speakers included current graduate students who have Dr. del Valle as their advisor, as well as alumni who were profoundly impacted by her mentorship during their time at UCB. Undergraduate speakers also participated and emphasized feeling robbed of the experience of taking classes with Professor del Valle. They also vocalized concern about the university's capacity to protect minority women from sexual harassment, especially if they were ignoring a tenured Latina who is a well respected UCB alumni.

Following the rally, supporters marched to California Hall, stopping at Sather Gate where students linked arms and closed off the campus entrance in protest of Professor del Valle's suspension. The action was timed during crossing period and diverted crowds of students to different paths, where Justice4Ivonne representatives handed out information about Professor del Valle's case and spoke to interested staff and students.

SEP 14: Town Hall @ MCC

On Thursday, September 14th, 80 students, alumni, and faculty attended a Town Hall at the Multicultural Community Center to hear updates about Professor del Valle's case and listen to testimonies written by her former students. Professor del Valle's only son also attended in person to speak on how the case has affected his mother, in both her personal and professional life.

AUG 25: Delegation to California Hall

On August 25th, 50 of Ivonne's past and present students went with Latinx student leaders to California Hall to request a meeting with the Chancellor, Vice Chancellor, or Vice Provost for Faculty to address their concerns about the mishandling of Professor del Valle's case. Students sat in California Hall for over an hour waiting for administrators to come out, monitored by police the entire time.
