I looked a bit more into the game and figured the concept seemed fun and it had some songs I like so I bought it to give it a try and boy was it worth it.First off Just Shapes & Beats 100% deserved that spot on New Frame Plus's video. The animations are sublime. You'd never expect to see simple shapes convey such personality but Berzerk Studio does it so well! Everything in the entire game is just loaded with personality and creativity to the point that you can just get a feel for the dev team behind it and how much they enjoyed it themselves.The only negative note I have on it is that my typical rule of thumb is that I get 1 hour per $1 I spend but in this game, I beat story in 4 hours. Typically this would make me more hesitant to recommend but with how beautifully crafted it is I am totally fine with letting this one issue slide. This issue could also be taken care of if the devs release a way to make custom maps, this would become one of my most played games if that was a thing.All in all this game is wonderful and I would highly recommend it!

Just Shapes and Beats is a rhythm/bullet hell hybrid game with a simple premise yet unique and beautiful execution. Each player controls a shape that can dodge or dash through pink projectiles that come at you to the beat of the music. That's it: just shapes and beats.

The developers thought of everything and everyone with their game modes. There is a story mode with a very interactive overworld map between levels (think Super Mario 3's overworld but on steroids and with minor challenges just to get to the next level). The story mode is quite challenging at times, but with checkpoints along the way (or a more forgiving casual mode option--Funky Mode!) it never becomes frustrating. A challenge mode lets you play or compete for the best rankings. There is also a party mode where the levels play automatically and the shapes/beats offer eye/ear candy to your party guests who can pick up a controller and jump in at any time to enjoy the game with no risk of dying (the player who does best each song gets a crown for bragging rights).

From the overwhelming polish of the game to the smallest of pop culture nods and easter eggs within the levels (Super Mario, Pac-Man, 007, Mario Kart, etc.), Just Shapes and Beats is an absolute joy to play. It offers plenty of fun to every type of gamer (from hardcore to casual) all in a beautifully wrapped package of exotic shapes and foot-tapping beats. I consider it one of the best indies and best multiplayer games on the Switch (right up there with Celeste, Steamworld Dig 2, Overcooked, Thumper, etc.) and an absolute must try for anyone looking to put $20 toward solid Switch entertainment.

Through the story mode (which can be played with others locally), you navigate your rectangle through a maze of pink objects cluttering the screen, all in tune with the music. The visual style while simplistic is highly effective, evoking memories of Geometry Wars, which is an excellent company to be in. In fact, since you are dodging and dashing through the levels, it feels like attempting a pacifist mode run.
