Multidisciplinary collaboration
Just culture must engage all disciplines and departments. Multidisciplinary collaboration is key – nursing, physicians, pharmacists, management, and even HR and legal departments should all be involved in shaping the culture.
Frontline staff and their managers should work together to identify system vulnerabilities and solutions, reinforcing that safety is everyone’s responsibility. Leaders can create cross-functional safety teams or hold forums (even “nursing hackathons” or focused problem-solving sessions) to tackle specific patient safety issues in a collaborative manner. Broad engagement builds collective ownership of outcomes.
