There are no direct flights from the US to Crete (Chania) year-round. You will almost always connect through Athens International Airport (ATH) first.
Option A — Fly Direct from Athens to Chania (Fastest)
Athens (ATH) to Chania International Airport (CHQ) has frequent flights with local Greek carriers (like Aegean or Sky Express). These flights are around ~45 minutes.
This is the quickest way after arriving in Athens.
Option B — Fly to Heraklion Then Travel to Chania
If you cannot find a flight ATH → CHQ, you can instead fly Athens → Heraklion International Airport (HER), which is the bigger airport on Crete and often has more flight options.
From Heraklion to Chania you can:
Rent a car and drive (about 2.5 to 3 hours west across the island).
Take a ferry from Heraklion port to Chania port (Souda) (about 2 hours by ferry).
If you want a more scenic route from Athens:
Ferries depart from Piraeus Port (Athens) to Chania or Heraklion in Crete. The trip takes about 8 to 10 hours and is a good overnight travel option.
This is much slower than flying but popular in summer for island hopping or slower travel.
Connection Time in Athens: Plan a comfortable connection (2–3+ hours) in Athens if you’re transferring to a domestic flight after your international arrival.
Best Airports:
Chania Airport (CHQ): Best if you are staying in Chania or western Crete.
Heraklion Airport (HER): Larger, more flight options, and easier logistics if you plan to tour the whole island first.
Quick Example Itineraries
US → Athens (ATH) → Chania (CHQ) — fastest and most direct.
US → Athens (ATH) → Heraklion (HER) → Car/Ferry → Chania — useful if CHQ flights are limited.
US → Athens, overnight ferry from Athens to Chania — slower but scenic.
