Please see the below video distributed by Owain Prosser, NZFs Junior Football Manager. This should serve as a valuable tool in educating everybody on the ‘Retreating Line’. The Retreating Line is not an optional tool but is now part of organised football in Junior Football.
The rules and regulations and how to set up the pitch on match day are included in the video and booklet.
The ‘Retreating Line’ has been introduced by NZF within Junior Football to benefit the players, please make a commitment to rolling this out in your club and please inform all of your coaches and parents – over the past 3 weekends the FDO team have seen a mix of the Retreating Line being implemented across the federation it has been introduced effectively in lots of grades by lots of clubs – Well Done. Although there has been lots of good practise there has been some issues e.g.
clubs implementing it in 7v7 grades but not knowing it was active in 9v9 grades,
the coach of 1 team trying to use the ‘Retreating Line’ rule but the opposition coach not knowing anything about it.
Refs/ Coaches only implementing it after seeing FDOs observing the match!
at some venues it was totally disregarded and no effort made even with the retreat line marked in a staggered line on the field.
This concept will take time to bed in, we can ALL help each other, there will be mistakes by players, refs and coaches and it’ll take time for players, coaches and parents to get used to it – please support each other as this is for the benefit of ALL our Junior players.
In the Football South Federation this roll out has been introduced in Otago, Southland and Central Otago and will be introduced in South Canterbury in 2019.
