There are many hand signals in soccer but for the Community league we will concentrate on the following:
Required video - Referee Signal Guide Video
**Note that there are some calls signals we DO NOT USE in Community Soccer - Direct Free Kick, Caution and Penalty Kick**
Optional video on Referee Mechanics - This video is very detailed about certified referee responsibilities and much of it does not impact our community games but informational.
All calls in community league are indirect kicks. This is a type of free kick awarded to a team for a less serious foul or infraction committed by the opposing team. Unlike a direct kick (community soccer does not use), where a player can score directly from the kick, an indirect kick requires the ball to touch another player before a goal can be scored. This means that the ball must be touched by another player from either team before entering the goal for the goal to count. Indirect kicks are typically awarded for fouls such as obstruction, dangerous play, or offside infractions, as well as certain technical infractions like goalkeeper handling violations within their own penalty area.
**Indirect free kick is awarded to the opposing team at the center spot on the halfway line if a goalkeeper punts or drop - kicks the ball in the air from his/her penalty area.**
A throw-in is a method of restarting play after the ball has gone out of bounds over the touchline. It is awarded to the team opposite of the one that last touched the ball before it went out of play.
During a throw-in, the player taking the throw must stand with both feet on or behind the touchline and use a throwing motion to return the ball into play. The thrower must use both hands to deliver the ball from behind and over their head, releasing it with an overhead motion.
The thrower's feet must remain on the ground during the throw, and the ball must be released from behind the head and overhand. The ball is considered in play as soon as it enters the field of play, and it can be contested by players from both teams once it is in play.
**IF THE PLAYER MAKES A MISTAKE WE STOP PLAY AND LET THEM TRY AGAIN AND EXPLAIN WHAT THEY DID WRONG. IF THEY DO IT AGAIN IT GETS HANDED TO THE OTHER TEAM**
A goal kick is a method of restarting play when the attacking team last touched the ball before it crossed the goal line, but without scoring a goal. It is awarded to the defending team, and the kick is taken from anywhere within the goal area. For the community league the defending team (team not taking goal kick) will back up to the halfway line. Once ball is touched for goal kick defending team can come out of their half.
A corner kick is a method of restarting play when the defending team last touched the ball before it crossed the goal line, but without scoring a goal, and was not awarded a goal kick. It is awarded to the attacking team, and the kick is taken from the corner arc at the nearest corner flag to where the ball went out of play. For the community league the opponents must remain in the box or at the half line until the first touch of the ball is played.
