Junghyun Nam

I am an adjunct faculty member in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at George Mason University, specializing in democracy, social movements, mass protests, protest policing, and emotion.

I am currently pursuing 3 lines of work:

• The first line of research investigates repression and its outcome, with particular emphasis on (1) the protesters' perception of and response to police and (2) citizens' engagement in repression.

• The second line of research focuses on the development of emotions in social movements, their status in specific contentious events, and their impacts on internal boundary-drawing.

• The third project examines how practices of discipline contribute to the continuation of nonviolent mass protests and marginalization within these contentious events.
