Hello, my name is Jung Chen / 陳容 / Tân Lông (she/her).
I hold a PhD in Sociology from the University of Cambridge. Currently, I am an Assistant Research Fellow at the Institute of Sociology (IOS), Academia Sinica in Taipei, Taiwan. And I am also a Research Affiliate at the Department of Sociology, University of Cambridge.
My research interests are medical sociology, sociology of family, sociology of reproduction, gender & intersectionality, and LGBTQ+ studies. As a Taiwanese and a young queer scholar, I am attentive to LGBTQ+ people’s rights in Taiwan and beyond.
My PhD thesis looks at queer reproductive justice and the (re)making of ‘queer relatedness’, with a specific focus on Taiwanese gay men who access transnational third-party reproduction to become fathers. I show the ways in which Taiwanese gay fathers’ 'repropaths' via biotechnologies both destabilise and accommodate normativities by elaborating their reproductive imaginaries and choices.
My current project looks at Cross-Strait Tongzhi couples’ intimacy practices, family-making, and reproductive plans in the context of sociolegal changes and geopolitics regarding the Taiwan-China political tensions.
I have been advocating for LGBTQ+ rights and reproductive justice, and I hope to raise public attention to reproductive rights for all parties and LGBTQ+ families through my ongoing research.
