At it's founding, Juneau Park Friends planted and maintained a pollinator garden that is now a mature, flourishing landscape. The garden is located on the west side of the restroom, creating a vibrant home for butterflies and bees and other neighborhood creatures. It has been flourishing for over 10 years.
Are you looking for some gardening therapy? JPF is in need of 1-2 volunteer tenders to oversee our small garden with basic maintenance. Maintenance requirements are simple. . .keep some aggressive native plants from taking over the space, and clean up debris.
Summertime:
Twice a month thin out the aggressive native plants and weed the area that is mulched at the front of the garden and remove plastic bags or debris that has floated into the area. With two people, that can be done in 60-90 minutes, twice a month.
Fall:
As plants die out in late fall, removal of dead, falling- over plant stems. Leave the upright plants for winter interest and seed treats for the birds.
Spring:
Mid-April, a good raking of the dead stems, leaves and winter debris so the plants can begin their new growth. Two people could get this job done in two hours. This is also the time to dig out the motherwort, garlic mustard etc. that doesn’t belong. That takes some additional time.
If you live downtown and miss getting you hands into nature, you could be our volunteers!
