Bringing equitable CS Education and Educators to all Philadelphia youth
The Jumpstarting Philadelphia Researcher Practitioner Partnership aims to bring equitable, inclusive, and high-quality computer science instruction aligned with educational standards to all Philadelphia students.
Jumpstart Philly CS4All addresses a critical problem of practice:
Students lack equitable access to certified CS educators in Philadelphia high schools.
This project brings together the School District of Philadelphia (SDP) teachers and administrators, local teacher associations, community and informal education organizations, students, parents, and researchers to address this problem by:
offering multiple pathways to certification;
strengthening support and communities of practice for current /potential CS educators;
working with stakeholders to develop a more effective policy framework that advances equitable CS adoption in schools and supports a more diverse pool of CS educators
Our Researcher Practitioner Partnership (RPP) explores issues of equity in concert with creating pathways to CS certification:
What barriers to offering CS exist in the classroom, building, learning network, district?
What are the challenges within SDP for recruiting a diverse group of CS educators?
Which pathways for CS educators (teacher to CS, professional to teacher, new teachers) are most likely to increase access to CS teachers? To CS certification?
What kind of teacher training and support results in the "easiest/fastest" adoption, most
equitable outcomes, and/or improves academic outcomes for Philadelphia schools?
A Networked Improvement Community for bringing equitable, inclusive, and high-quality computer science instruction aligned with educational standards to all Philadelphia students.
