A jump ball is a method used to begin or resume play in basketball. It is similar to a face-off in ice hockey and field lacrosse and a ball-up in Australian rules football. Two opposing players attempt to gain control of the ball after an official tosses it into the air between them.

In the NBA, WNBA, and competitions operated by Euroleague Basketball, a jump ball occurs at the start of the game (called the opening tip or opening tip-off), the start of any extra period (tip-off), to settle special situations where penalties cancel out and neither team is previously entitled to the ball, and to settle any held balls. Held balls occur when two opposing players both lay equal claim to the ball, and after trying to wrestle it from each other, end up in a stalemate. A jump ball may also be called if there are different calls by two or more referees.

However, most competitions other than the NBA, WNBA, and Euroleague Basketball use the alternating possession rule to settle all jump ball situations after the opening tip. This uses a possession arrow on the scorekeeper's table. Whenever such a jump ball situation occurs, possession of the ball is awarded to the team that is moving in the direction of the possession arrow on offense. The arrow then swaps to point to the other team. At the start of the game, the arrow points to the team that lost the opening tip.

The alternating possession arrow rule went into effect in college basketball in 1981. Ever since, it has been controversial. Supporters of the possession arrow believe that jump balls give the team with taller players and better leapers an unfair advantage over the other, plus the possession arrow (especially in the NCAA Tournament) gives another element of strategy. But those who oppose the possession arrow believe that it has frequently undone a trailing team's defensive effort because it is the other team's turn to get the ball.

FIBA, with recommendation by NCAA Men's Supervisor of Officials Hank Nichols, on the FIBA World Technical Commission at the time, adopted the alternating possession rule in 2003, with a major difference. In overtime periods, play begins with the arrow. In other organizations, another jump ball is conducted.

FIBA mandated that ULEB, which operated the EuroLeague and Eurocup before handing responsibility to the Euroleague Company, adopt the FIBA rule in 2005, as part of FIBA's rules being used by the EuroLeague, effective the 2005-06 season. Previously, the EuroLeague used the NBA jump ball rules. However, the Euroleague Company reinstated the jump ball rule in 2013.

Uniquely, 3x3, a formalized version of halfcourt three-on-three basketball overseen by FIBA, does not use a jump ball at any time in a game. Under current (2016) rules, the first possession is based on the result of a pregame coin toss; the winner can choose to have the first possession either at the start of the game or at the start of a potential overtime. During the game, held balls are automatically awarded to the defensive team.[1]

Tap, use the mouse, or the left and right arrow keys to make the ball bounce left or right through the levels. Avoid the obstacles and grab the golden stars. Get to the checkered platform to finish the level. How many levels can you finish?

Since I bought 2k18, when I double and force a jump ball against the opposing team, I've only been able to win like 2 out of like 60. My player doesn't even jump sometimes, is it just me? Do you not press triangle anymore?

While Edey would have likely won the tip regardless of whether he had advance notice of his jump ball opponent, Samford head coach Bucky McMillan did tip his hand last week, saying in a video on social media that he was going with Graziani on Monday.

"We're playing against 7-4 All-American candidate Zach Edey. Some say 7-4, some say 7-10. We've got a secret weapon for that jump ball. His name is Dallas Graziani. We've got some intense training we'll be doing over the next five days to show you how big Dallas Graziani at 5-7 -- Dallas Graziani, at 5-7 -- is going to win that jump ball ... See you at the jump circle, big Zach."

Note for NCAA and lower - Jump ball is very important because all possessions are alternating including jump ball situations and second half possession. Original basketball rules settled things with a jump ball. Possession arrow was something to make things go faster and to be fairer to smaller teams (and to get rid of referees having issues throwing a good, fair ball for jumps).

Just picked up a Space Jam (I know, I know, not one of the favorites here, but my kids love it), and having an issue with the Jump Ball mechanism where approximately 20% of the time the ball doesn't get hit with enough force and slowly rolls onto the back wire ramp and gets stuck as the ramp doesn't really start to curve down until further back. Most of the time everything works fine and the ball gets struck cleanly with plenty of force. I took apart the mechanism and cleaned up the coil parts but still seems to be happening. I don't have the right size coil sleeve, or I'd replace it right now, but other than that I'm not sure what's going on. I don't want to start bending the metal ramp slightly but really seems like this is not a spot the ball should be able to get stuck...Anyway, it's a brand new pin for me and I'm not that familiar with it and thought this might be a common issue that someone could advise on. Other than this one issue, game appears to be in great shape.

certainly seems like it should have an angle to it...seems to be assembled correctly though. Typically the ball is struck with the plunger under the basketball so not an issue...but if not struck cleanly it's going to roll slowly and get stuck before the ramp starts to dip.

Stupid question but are you sure the ball isn't clipping the basketball plastic on it's way to the ramp? I have a space jam and my ball has never gotten stuck as my wireform is actually sloped back toward the kick up so if it didn't have enough power it would roll back and then get kicked once again.

I found that my basketball plastic was a little warped and the ball was occasionally clipping the overhanging plastic and losing momentum. Getting stuck there seems weird though it shouldn't be a stationary place to it to sit it should roll one way or the other I thought

Thanks for the suggestions, but yes I tested with the level on the playfield and I still have the problem with the basketball plastic removed, so those don't seem to be the issue. I think pinmanguy is correct that if it doesn't have the speed to go down the ramp, then the ball should be dropping back into the jump ball hole to try again. It does this most of the time it when there is not hit cleanly by the plunger. So I guess I have two seperate problems here...(1) why is the plunger not hitting the ball cleanly every time and (2) why is the ball getting stuck on the wire ramp after a bad hit. I hope its as simple as a new coil sleeve for #1, but we'll see. Any other SJ owners care to chime in? Seems like a really poor design here that it wouldn't just go down the ramp in this case, but what do I know...

alright, rebuilt the the coil assembly and realized that's not the issue at all, it's actually the magnet that isn't grabbing the ball some of the time after the VUK kicks it up. Does the magnet get weak and need to be replaced or does this sound like more of a logic issue? Intermittent problems always seem to be the ones that drive me crazy.

Yeah, magnet works fine every time when running the solinoid test. At least it pulses...I have no idea if its strength is adquate though. Doesn't seem to be a logic issue as i held a paper clip under there and test about 25 times during game play to make sure that the magnet is firing each time. Normally the magnet would fail to catch the ball a number of times during this test but the paper clip moved every time. So...do these magnets get weakened over time? I can replace the magnet, but looks like it's about $50 at marco, so want to see if that sounds worthwhile to anyone before I order it. Not sure what else it could be though.

I had this problem as well, the ball would eject from the ball plunger, and not make it 'down' the metal ramp, and drop back into the hole. if I remember right I had to tweak my metal ramps, had to do something with the manget? I did tear down the whole pf at one point, and reassembly resolved my problem. sorry, I haven't seen my SJ in a year (storage). like I said, that area is a bad design imo. the ramps are 'level' at the ball area. sorry, i'm not much help, if I had access to my machine I could look into it more. sounds like you need to tear down that whole area, inspect each part and its alignment and try to resolve the mechanical issue. maybe inspect the magnet itself? I know sometimes the copper inside expands/moves over time within the magnet, like a bundle of wire would if not tied together. i'd probably say the magnet is good, if it's registering in the test, and works some of the time. you may have a poor solder joint or something that is drawing the power down? sorry, lots of ideas, hope some help

Jump ball plays are not really applicable for my coaching playbook, considering the only jump ball opportunities for us in high school happens at the beginning of each game. However it is interesting to see the special situations that occur in the NBA and even in college. Today the Suns ran a backscreen off of the Jump Ball that I have seen from several teams throughout the NBA as well as college basketball. 2351a5e196
